Als Piersanti wenig später von der Ermordung des Mannes erfährt, ist bereits ein gnadenloser Wettlauf um die kostbare Marmorschale entbrannt. Hilfesuchend wendet sich Piersanti an seinen besten Freund, den Fremdenführer Luca Montesi. Von der Polizei vorerst ignoriert, beginnen die beiden Männer auf eigene Faust zu ermitteln und begeben sich auf die Suche nach Ariana. Bis in die höchsten Vatikankreise führt die Spur des Verbrechens, ein uraltes Geheimnis nach und nach ans Tageslicht bringend...
