Der Katechismus der Familie Musgrave erschien erstmals im Mai 1893 im Strand Magazine und wurde ein Jahr später mit 10 anderen Fällen in Die Memoiren des Sherlock Holmes veröffentlicht.
Holmes erzählt Watson von einem seiner ersten Aufträge, die er in London als beratender Detektiv annahm: Reginald Musgrave, ein Bekannter aus Sherlocks College-Zeiten, bat ihn damals um Hilfe, da auf seinem Landsitz zwei Menschen spurlos verschwanden. Zum einen der Butler Richard Brunton, der kurz zuvor seinen Herrn sehr erzürnt hatte, zum anderen dessen ehemalige Verlobte Rachel Howells, die krank und geistig verwirrt nach der Trennung von Brunton wie ein Gespenst durch das Haus wandelte.
