Nach Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs erschütterten Aufstände, Generalstreiks und Straßenkämpfe das geschlagene Deutschland. In Oberschlesien griffen polnische Aufständische nach dem deutschen Industriegebiet, im Ruhrgebiet zwangen französische und belgische Truppen mit äußerster Brutalität die streikenden Bergarbeiter zum Frondienst. Ein ganzes Land wurde zum Spielball ausländischer Kräfte.
Die Spirale der Gewalt drehte sich immer schneller: ab 1920 bestimmten blutige Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Freikorps und Selbstschutztruppen, anarchistischen Marodeuren und selbsternannten Roten Armeen den Alltag. Ein Funke genügte, und das explosive Gemisch würde in die Luft fliegen...
