Mercè Rodoreda, geboren 1908 in Barcelona, gilt als die bedeutendste katalanische Schriftstellerin des 20. Jahrhunderts. Mit 20 veröffentlichte sie erste Kurzgeschichten; die Jahre des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs verbrachte sie im Exil in Frankreich und in der Schweiz, wo sie u. a. ihr Hauptwerk "Auf der Plaça del Diamant" verfasste, das in mehr als 20 Sprachen übersetzt wurde.
