Durch Londons stinkende Gassen des Jahres 1728 geht ein Totgeweihter: Tom Hawkins ist gut gekleidet auf dem Weg zum Galgen und hat ein reines Gewissen, denn er ist unschuldig. Aber was nützt ihm das schon? Er muss es erst einmal beweisen, bevor sich der Strick um seinen Hals legt. Allerdings hat er sich viele Feinde in den gehobenen Kreisen gemacht, die nichts dagegen hätten, wenn Hawkins für immer zum Schweigen gebracht werden würde. Antonia Hodgsons neuer historischer Thriller versetzt den Hörer unmittelbar in das London des 18. Jahrhunderts.
