Als Hermann Hesse sein Märchen "Der Dichter" schrieb, war er 35 Jahre alt. Noch vier Jahrzehnte später hatte diese Geschichte vom chinesischen Poeten Han Fook so wenig an Bedeutung für ihn verloren, dass er sie 1955 für eine Rundfunksendung auf Tonband sprach. Es ist seine früheste selbst gelesene Erzählung, die uns als Tondokument überliefert ist. Sie zeigt Hesses Wahlverwandtschaft mit den Kulturen Ostasiens und nimmt Motive aus späteren Dichtungen wie "Siddhartha" und "Das Glasperlenspiel" vorweg. Das gilt auch für die hier erstmals publizierten Tondokumente seiner Gedichte "Bericht des Schülers", "Der Blütenzweig" u.a. Die Erzählung "Der Wolf" (1902) und den 1931 entstandenen zeitkritischen "Brief an einen Kommunisten" liest Siemen Rühaak.
"Der Dichter" ist eines der wenigen Tondokumente des öffentlichkeitsscheuen Hermann Hesse aus dem Jahre 1955.
