Mit der witzigen Charakterisierung des Überlebenskünstlers und Schnorrers "Datterich" hat Ernst Elias Niebergall der liebenswürdigen "Schlitzohrigkeit" seiner südhessischen Landsleute literarisch ein Denkmal gesetzt. "Datterichs" Lebensmotto lautet kurz und bündig: "Bezahle, wann mer Geld hat, des is kah Kunst: Awer bezahle, wenn mer kahns hat, des is e Kunst, liewer Mann, un die muss ich erscht noch lerne". Die "Localposse in der Mundart der Darmstädter" veröffentlichte er 1837 anonym.

Im "Datterich" aus dem Jahr 1950 wirken mit: Kasimir Edschmid, der erste Vertreter des literarischen Expressionismus, der bekannte Publizist Dolf Sternberger und der spätere Direktor der Deutschen Bibliothek, Hanns W. Eppelsheimer.
