Zeitungsberichte bestätigen, dass ein fürchterlicher Brand aus der jüngeren Vergangenheit noch nicht ganz geklärt ist. Sherlock Holmes würde dies nicht besonders beunruhigen, wenn nicht mehr als hundertfünfzig Menschen damals zu Tode gekommen worden wären. Dass dann auch noch die New Yorker Polizei lieber nichts mehr von der Sache wissen will, lässt Holmes hellhörig werden und ehe er sich’s versieht, sind beide mitten in ihrem nächsten Kriminalfall.
