Bankdirektor Benjamin Hampton, der immer noch in der Rolle des Gönners von Watson und Holmes auftritt und den beide aus London gut kennen, scheint plötzlich doch keine ganz so weiße Weste mehr zu haben. Holmes kann Watson aber erst von seinem Argwohn überzeugen, als Hampton in seinem eigenen Büro vom FBI verhaftet wird. Ein "vorgetäuschter Selbstmord“ im Bundesgefängnis von Auburn, zeigt Holmes, in welch dunkle Machenschaften er diesmal unfreiwillig verstrickt wurde.
