Die schöne, aber verwitwete Gutsbesitzerin Jelena Popowa ist seit Jahren in Trauer um Ihren Mann. Eines Tages kommt der grobschlächtige Gutsbesitzer Smirnow und fordert 1200 Rubel, die Jelenas Mann ihm schulden würde. Jelena hat das Geld nicht und vertröstet ihn. Smirnow bleibt und wartet auf das Geld. Es kommt zu einer Auseinandersetzung mit überraschendem Ende.

Der Junggeselle Iwan Lomow kommt ins Gut seines Nachbarn und kündigt an, dessen Tochter Natalja einen Heiratsantrag machen zu wollen. Aufgrund von Streitereien kommt es hierzu aber nicht. Schließlich übernimmt der Vater die Vermittlung. Anton Pawlowitsch Tschechow (1960-1904) war ein russischer Schriftsteller, Novellist und Dramatiker.
