A heart stopper

Another brilliant thriller by Mr James and perfectly delivered by Mr Pugh, caught myself holding my breathe towards the end! Just when you get an urge of frustration for Dr Tennant or one of the cops, he lets a little more rope out, then tugs it tight again! Very entertaining characters and you can feel the tension.

very enjoyable

But what the hell happened to Glen Branson's character. He was great funny character most of the time. What happened to him? In this book just a boring plod. I hope that changes.

Ten chapters in and I returned.

I was 10 chapters in and returned. So disappointing since I usually love James and have read all his Roy Grace series. This is just a silly story and not helped at all by a really lame, melodramatic narration. The delivery was often unintentionally funny.

What a Thriller should be

Peter James writes super thrillers, some better than others. This one - a really good one - took me through the wee hours of the morning without falling asleep. The narrator was excellent and assisted with it's delivery excellently. Thoroughly recommend.

Brilliant.

Gripping tale. Just wanted to keep on listening. I avidly read the Inspector Grace series and have read the other Peter James books audible offers. In the later group this is one of the best -on par with The Alchemist and Absolute Proof. Very detailed plot- best to listen with care and read in quite long session to grasp the twists and inferences made throughout the the story . This starts as a tail of revenge- but us it?
Quite interesting also to read about Peter James- himself

Absolutely Brilliant

just loved this book couldn't stop listening, had a lot of late nights Peter James is such a brilliant author wasn't keen on Leighton Pugh voice but after a while it got better, still think it would have been better if the narrator was different.

Very slow and dark.

I am a big fan of Mr James. But i must say that i did not enjoy this book. It was dragging on and on with too much details.
Very dark story line and uncomfortable.
I stopped listening couple of times , fast forwarded good no. of chapters as it was dragging on.
I dont think i recommend this book to anybody.

Best nail biting thriller!

Leighton Pugh is up right up there with Johnathan Keeble! And this is by far my best Peter James book and I’ve listened to many ! Wow I’ve been kept awake for hours couldn’t put it down!

Introducing DC Glen Branson

Why have I only just discovered this book?? I'm a huge fan of Mr James Roy Grace series. This book is not part of that series, but it does introduce a younger Glen Branson before he met Grace.

As with the Grace series this is a fast paced, brilliantly constructed thriller with short chapters that leave you wanting just one more, until you realise it's hours past your bedtime! It's not for the faint hearted as it features a demented serial killer and there are gruesome and disturbing scenes of torture. It was great to see how Glen Branson started as a DC, knowing how his character developed in the Grace series. Brilliant escapism!

Fab narration by Leighton Pugh.

Very good but...... read the review

Peter James is just brilliant. I love his work. That said this is not his best novel. But what really makes this a tricky recommendation is the narration. It really is pretty hard to listen to. If this guy was reading a science podcast that would be fine... But his novel is a bit ruined by him. Sorry. But still worth a listen on balance.
