Agnes Henningsens roman Den store Kærlighed handler om en aldrende malerinde og hendes yngre elsker, som hun ender med at gennemtæve i et voldsomt anfald af jalousi. Romanen blev genstand for stor forargelse, og Henningsen blev endnu engang lagt for had, ligesom hendes forfatterskab blev kaldt fordærveligt og åndeligt giftigt.
Den konservative godsejer Rudolf Juel hævdede, at romanen kunne "lægge Spirer til Forbrydelser og Sindssyge". Af kollegaen og vennen Johannes V. Jensen blev romanen dog rost til skyerne, ligesom Knut Hamsun i Norge også skrev i høje toner om værket.
Den store Kærlighed udkom første gang i 1917.
