Editorial Reviews
All the professional calm that Dr. Rhea Lynch learned in medical school deserts her when her closest friend suffers what appears to be a catastrophic stroke. Soon, Dr. Lynch learns that the stroke is more mysterious than it appears, especially when other patients start coming in to the ER of her small South Carolina hospital with all the same symptoms. Will she be able to find the real culprit in time? This is a fast-paced medical mystery skillfully narrated by performer Carol Hendrickson, who does an excellent and enjoyable South Carolina accent. Listeners who love feisty female heroines, medical mysteries, and tightly-plotted thrillers will enjoy this first installment of the Rhea Lynch series.
Publisher's Summary
Dr. Rhea Lynch left a suffocating life in Charleston to practice medicine in the ER of a small South Carolina Hospital. Now, Dawkins County is her home, a place that holds the only real family she's ever known.
But when she returns from vacation, Rhea is shocked to discover that her best friend, Marisa, is near death and unable to communicate. The official diagnosis: a paralyzing stroke. Despite the family's attempts to keep her away, Rhea is determined to make her own diagnosis.
In a surreptitious examination, a hideous truth is revealed. Then a man is brought into her ER with similar symptoms. And then another. Each one of her patients has been willfully, brutally, silenced in a most inhuman way. Desperate to find answers, Rhea must determine who she can trust, as a powerful conspiracy threatens the people she loves - and perhaps the entire community.

Good Start To A Series
I just finished this book, and it is now one of my favorites. I love Ms. Hunter's descriptive writing style, and the detail in the medical situations is wonderful. I have been involved in medicine my whole working life, and have always been a big fan of Robin Cook. I am happy to say that Gwen Hunter has given me a new source of medical mystery novels. I have just started my third Dr. Rhea book and am looking forward to another captivating story!

Great Medical Novel. I will probably get more of
I always enjoyed this author's series about the world of medical examiners. This book is similar in style and the characters are pretty good. I would not rate this book as one of the best, but it is well worth the read.

Surprisingly Good
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Lots of turns & twists in this story. They sure are mean & nasty in little Southern towns!!! There were so many things going on that I never did figure out who the really bad guy was.
Have you listened to any of Carol Hendrickson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. I've never read or listened to anything by this reader before but I like her style. She did a good job with the characters & pronounced all the medical terms properly.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. I was in my home office doing data entry & worked until dawn so I could finish the book.
Any additional comments?
I'll be buying more books in this series.

Slow to start but, gathers speed for a wild ride
If you could sum up Delayed Diagnosis in three words, what would they be?
Entertaining, enticing, unpredictable.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
This is one that I was not able to predict.
Which scene was your favorite?
As an animal lover, her experience with the dumped dog touched my heart.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Designing Women meets Murder She Wrote.
Any additional comments?
I have been looking for another series to grab my attention. In the beginning, I will admit the extreme southern accent was hard to tolerate and I had to make myself listen. However as I got further into the book, the southern charm, traditions and nuance's made the accent fit perfectly with the character, to the point I could actually visualize the character and settings.

Engaging
This is book one in the Rhea Lynch MD series. Dr. Lynch moved from Charleston to practice medicine in the ER of a small South Carolina hospital in Dawkin County.
Dr. Lynch returns from vacation to find her best friend near death form a stroke. Her family blocks Lynch from visiting her. Then a man is brought into the ER with similar symptoms, then another and another. A powerful conspiracy affects the entire community. Lynch discovers it is not a stroke but whatever it is, it was caused on purpose.
The pace is fast, lots of riveting ER action. The story is full of suspense, well drawn characters and a strong story line. I am enjoying this easy to read book that is full of suspense and humor. I have learned a number of southern expressions that I have never heard before. I am glad to have discovered the writings of Gwen Hunter. I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. Carol Hendrickson narrated the book.

Delayed Diagnosis
Any additional comments?
Read by Carol Hendrickson, Delayed Diagnosis is just over ten hours of listening. This is Book 1 in the Rhea Lynch, MD series of mysteries. Rhea Lynch returns from a vacation to chaos. Her best friend is near catatonic, cannot speak, diagnosed with having had a stroke. More people show up in the ER with similar symptoms. But … it is not a stroke, rather a devious, diabolic attempt to silence individuals who know the truth. Evil beyond description. Who done it? Rhea Lynch digs. Take a ride with Delayed Diagnosis and find out!
Nice introduction to a character, however, if I were to have my druthers, the author would taper back with the educational medical verbiage. Speaking metaphorically, I wasn't too interested in how the watch was built, only that it was ticking. Robin Cook, author of medical thrillers such as Coma and Outbreak, would like this story, right up his alley. Narration is great, no trouble discerning who-says-what-to-who ... no trouble sticking with this story, a page turner. Enjoy

Great Story
Would you consider the audio edition of Delayed Diagnosis to be better than the print version?
N/A
What did you like best about this story?
I love medical thrillers. This one takes place in the South. The reader has a Southern accent, which really added to the story. It has a nice twist- which I figured out about 2/3 of the way in- but I had NO IDEA who the villain was until the end!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I have it on my Alexa and my Tap...I took the Tap with me outside gardening, into the kitchen, everywhere I was! I want to "read" the next one in the series...

Good one!
As a nurse I appreciated the fairly accurate depiction of the typical small town ER. It is fiction but tried to relay the real feeling . Looking forward to next book on series

A great new series
Would you listen to Delayed Diagnosis again? Why?
Probably not for serval years, but then again, I never listen to books more than once.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked "The Doc" but all the characters were well done and stayed true to their nature.
Which scene was your favorite?
no special one
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
no
Any additional comments?
At first the reader was a little "off" for me, and I was not sure I like the reading. As I got into it, all tied together and I have just bought the second in the series. If it is as good, I am in for the long run with this series!

First story in an interesting series
If you could sum up Delayed Diagnosis in three words, what would they be?
Entertaining listening
Any additional comments?
Several years ago I read the second and third books in this series but never got hold of the first and so when I found it on audible I bought it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Parts stretch credulity a bit but it was very entertaining and I went on to buy the rest of the series. If you like family stories with a mystery turn based round a medical theme you will enjoy this.

Enjoyable listen
Carl Hendrickson, whilst has the southern belle voice is a little to high pitched and quick. That for me was a medical thriller that belongs up there with Kay Scarpetta and Bones. Loved the characters, loved the storyline which in this currently competitive and cut throat society was entirely believable. I want more on the possible relationship between Mark and Rhea, that could be scorching! Off to find book 2, I need my dose of Belle and the blonde puppy!

Good entertaining novel
Would you listen to Delayed Diagnosis again? Why?
Probably would listen to the book again I thought it was quite an interesting story and quite gripping towards the end. First of a series and I am now half way through the second despite the narrator see below
What was one of the most memorable moments of Delayed Diagnosis?
Hard to say without giving too much away but the whole book was a bit different I don't normally read medical detective stories but the detail is quite believable I am not medically qualified though so a real medical person might disagree
How could the performance have been better?
Yes I didn't like the narration at all which is a shame far too urgent I don't think the voice fitted the character at all.
Any additional comments?
Good introduction to a series I will be listening to the others

So hard to listen too
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
I have no idea it was really difficult to listen to
What could Gwen Hunter have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Asked someone else to narate it
How did the narrator detract from the book?
For me it was dredful
Any additional comments?
I bought this from the sale option which did not offer a sound sample - if I had listend to the narator I would not have downloaded it - very dissapointed
