Story
The 2016 election was a watershed for the United States. But, as Tim Alberta explains in American Carnage, to understand Trump’s victory is to view him not as the creator of this era of polarization and bruising partisanship, but rather as its most manifest consequence. American Carnage is the story of a president’s rise based on a country’s evolution and a party’s collapse. As George W. Bush left office with record-low approval ratings and Barack Obama led a Democratic takeover of Washington, Republicans faced a moment of reckoning.

Story
The story of Donald Trump’s rise to power is the story of a buried American history - buried because people in power liked it that way. It was visible without being seen, influential without being named, ubiquitous without being overt. Sarah Kendzior’s Hiding in Plain Sight pulls back the veil on a history spanning decades, a history of an American autocrat in the making. In doing so, she reveals how our continual loss of freedom, the rise of consolidated corruption, and the secrets behind a burgeoning autocratic United States have been hiding in plain sight for decades.

In Dark Towers, award-winning journalist David Enrich reveals the truth about Deutsche Bank and its epic path of devastation. Tracing the bank’s history back to its propping up of a default-prone American developer in the 1880s, helping the Nazis build Auschwitz, and wooing Eastern Bloc authoritarians, he shows how in the 1990s, via a succession of hard-charging executives, Deutsche made a fateful decision to pursue Wall Street riches, often at the expense of ethics and the law.

Publisher's Summary
Instant New York Times best seller
"Important and stunning. This is must-read material if you want to understand what the Trump administration is still up to right now." (Lawrence O'Donnell)
There are questions that the Mueller report couldn't - or wouldn't - answer. What actually happened to instigate the Russia investigation? Did President Trump’s meddling incriminate him? There’s no mystery to what Trump thinks. He claims that the Deep State, a cabal of career bureaucrats - among them, Andrew McCabe, Lisa Page, and Peter Strzok, previously little-known figures within the FBI whom he has obsessively and publicly reviled - is concerned only with protecting its own power and undermining the democratic process. Conversely, James Comey has defended the FBI as incorruptible apolitical public servants who work tirelessly to uphold the rule of law.
For the first time, best-selling author James B. Stewart sifts these conflicting accounts to present a clear-eyed view of what exactly happened inside the FBI in the lead-up to the 2016 election, drawing on scores of interviews with key FBI, Department of Justice, and White House officials and voluminous transcripts, notes, and internal reports. In full detail, this is the dramatic saga of the FBI’s simultaneous investigations of both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump - the first time in American history the FBI has been thrust into the middle of both parties' campaigns for the presidency. Stewart shows what exactly was set in motion when Trump fired Comey, triggering the appointment of Robert Mueller as an independent special counsel and causing the FBI to open a formal investigation into the president himself. And how this unprecedented event joined in ongoing combat two vital institutions of American democracy: the presidency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
At stake in this epic battle is the rule of law itself, the foundation of the US Constitution. There is no room for compromise, but plenty for collateral damage. The reputations of both sides have already been harmed, perhaps irrevocably, and at great cost to American democracy. Deep State goes beyond the limits of the legally constrained Mueller report, showing how the president’s obsession with the idea of a conspiracy against him is still upending lives and sending shock waves through both the FBI and the Department of Justice. In this world-historical struggle - Trump versus intelligence agencies - Stewart shows us in rare style what’s real and what matters now. And for the looming 2020 election.
Critic Reviews
"A first draft of history that reminds us just how bizarre these times really are. A New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter, Stewart has assembled a gripping blow-by-blow account of President Trump’s years-long showdown with the FBI - from the first inklings of something about an email server through the release of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s report on Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.... Encountering it all smashed between the pages of a single book is a new experience, less the stop-start jerkiness of a tweetstorm than the slow-build dread of a dramatic tragedy.... The events recounted in Deep State help explain how we ended up at our latest impasse and how Trump is likely to react as it unfolds. What makes the book more than a recitation of unseemly facts is its well-rendered human drama." (The Washington Post)

Deep means profound, expert, knowledgeable,wise
Public service is not for everyone. It is for people who have the expertise and enough money not to have to worry about it (or think about how to use their position to make more of it) while they serve the American people. This book begins with conversations between Robert Mueller and James Comet that clarify very precisely the meaning of deep state and why it's the highest form of compliment, not the lowest form of insult. It Ignore the trolls, read this book, and see your way back to sanity, please!

What is the Rule of Law?
Deep State, Trump, the FBI, and the Rule of Law. Written by James B. Stewart and narrated by Keith Szarabajka. The question screams out which side is abiding by the law and which side is violating the rule of law? The cops or the candidates? Why revisit the facts we all know, and have personally lived through? First, for the opportunity to listen to Mr. Szarabajka’s deep slow speaking baritone voice. It is truly a pleasure to drift alongside while he tells Mr. Stewart’s story. More importantly, the story ever so slowly tells the reader what is meant by an investigative rule of law and how essential it is to our government, our democracy, the health and wealth of our nation and our personal freedoms. Americans accused of misconduct can count on the FBI and its process of following an investigative rule of law, a process to likely discover truth; Chinese and Russian citizens are guaranteed a result, not a process. Americans are gurarantted a process. The concept is complicated: It may be fully described as the restriction on the arbitrary exercise of power by subordinating it to well-defined and established undertakings to determine likely guild or not. Our Constitution, our unique governing system, requires adverse decisions against our interest are only valid if considered in a preformatted manner. A methodology that requires, a known rule, true facts, and the honest application of the facts to the rule [of law]. Mr. Steward explains how essential that simple Constitutional concept is to live by - at least to have our police authorities live by. This is a book that tells us how carefully the work undertaken by the FBI was done in following the rule of law or legal investigative process in their examinations of both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump during the 2016 election season. Putting this all in the simplest of terms. This is a diligent, thorough, and discerning examination whether the FBI and other state authorities committed illegal or even questionable acts to thwart a potential president. You need to know such information to support the present effort of impeachment or oppose it. Are the investigators following facts and rules or just espousing wishful fantasies for political purposes. Figure it out. This book answers that question in a very clear and convincing manner historically and provides a tool for what may be coming after today.

Distorted narrative. Clear Bias.
This book has a clear bias. No where does the author talk about the interviews or the means by which he was able to obtain the “he said she said” that is put forth on this book. He writes as though it were a script. Memory is a funny thing. Never does he question their statements as being anything other than exactly what was said. He writes perfectly crafted statements exchanged during personal encounters as though it is indisputable fact. He writes from the perspective of some of the most questionable characters on the national stage in the last several years. He makes them seem relatable and of the upmost honor and integrity. He paints Trump and those around him as inept and incompetent. I’m halfway through the book and he has not mentioned the fact that the FBI was wire tapping the Trump campaign headquarters. This book sounds like it was written by Hilary Clinton herself. While having an inkling of truth, it is full of deceit being touted as fact. I call BS. Any halfwit can see that this book is quite nearly the opposite of what actually happened. History will prove this book to be false.

A must read for both the Left and the Right
I was unsure of this book to start and delayed reading it for a while, but found that it was an even-handed narrative from the start of the Mueller probe to the eventual release of the report. No one comes through as a shining example of how things should be, but this book reinforces my belief that Trump is probably the #1 conspiracy theorist of all-time (because it benefits him) and folks like McCabe, Comey, Stzrok, and (Lisa) Page have taken an undeserving hit on their reputations and the good work they accomplished while in the FBI. Keith Szarabajka's narration is top-notch and his Trumpian voice was actually "fun" to listen to.

Thoughtful and a fast listen
Although I have listened to A Higher Loyalty and The Threat, both excellent, I enjoyed revisiting and hearing another perspective on, and additional, details. Keith's narration is superb, he even makes me laugh at his impersonations. I sincerely hope that the embarrassment many of us feel over our top officials will be over in 2021 and we can once again take pride in our government and those who run our country. It seems surreal to be living this 4-year nightmare and is hard to believe it is still going on. How can the greatest nation on earth be run by intimidation, bullying, vengefulness and vulgarity? What a disgusting example this sets for our children. How does the inner circle look in the mirror each night and feel OK with supporting such behavior? Thank you, James Stewart, for writing this. Good job.

Trump vs. FBI
This book focuses exclusively on Trump's battle against the FBI. It reviews the election, interactions with Russia, etc., but the focus stays squarely on the Trump vs. FBI saga throughout. Reading it makes you nervous - we have a president who hates the law and law enforcement. We watch it happen on TV in real life, and now the saga up to date of publication is committed to print, and to history, in this book. The story is still unfolding as the book came out a week ago. While our overall situation is deeply disturbing, it's comforting to find all this information in one book. It restores your faith in truth to have Pulitzer prize winning journalists like James B. Stewart to document these surreal times. Well worth the read.

A Great Review
If you have read other books about Trump and the FBI such as James Comey’s book, none of the information in this book will be a new to you. If you have not read or kept up with the news, this will be a good summary of what has happened. The book is well written and researched. It covers the period from Comey’s investigation of Hilary Clinton’s emails to Bill Barr’s handling the Mueller Report. The book does cover more information about various people in the FBI after Comey was fired than other books. The Term “Deep State” is a name made up by the “Alt-Right”. It is a prejudicial misnomer for the thousands of federal government employees. The book is twelve hours and one minute. Keith Szarabajka does a good job narrating the book. Keith is an actor and video game actor as well as an audiobook narrator.
