About this listen

DI Alec McKay is back.

Twenty years ago, Jackie Galloway was a senior cop with a bad reputation. Then he ended up on the wrong side of the wrong people, and his career was ruined. Sacked and with no pension, he ends up eking out his last days on Scotland's Black Isle, his mind lost to dementia, supported only by his wife, Bridie...until Galloway is found dead. The police assume the death to be accidental until Bridie reveals that her husband has been receiving threatening letters containing only the phrase 'not forgotten. Not forgiven.'

DI Alec McKay is struggling to come to terms with life without his estranged wife, Chrissie, and is living in isolation on the Black Isle. As a junior officer, McKay had been allocated to Galloway's team and has bad memories of the man and his methods. Now he finds himself investigating Galloway's death. But when suspicion falls on him and more police officers are murdered, the pressure is on for McKay to solve the case. Why would the killer seek revenge 20 years after Galloway left the force?

The gripping follow-up to Candles and Roses can be enjoyed as a stand-alone.

It kept me guessing. I can usually tell where the story is going but not this one. Loved it. And the narrator was awesome. How he keeps his head with all the different voices is amazing. If I have to give a criticism it is that the story isn’t completely finished. But I suppose that will hopefully be clarified in book 3. Can’t wait to hear it.

Fantastic story and plot

Loved this story. Very well told my the narrator, his consistent use of different voice tones and modulation was really good. I’d listen to other stories he narrates!
The story was interesting and had a credible premise. I hope there’s a further book!

Intriguing story with unexpected plot twists

Have not come across this author’s work before- I found the whole book engaging and really liked many of the characters, flaws and all. The narration/reading was excellent- every word clear, whether in a rich Scottish accent, or other UK accents for some characters. I usually have to slow audio speed down to follow all that is said, but I found the audio speed of this one just right for me. I hope to find more by this author, and by this narrator, very soon.

I enjoy the tale but had trouble at times with the accent but otherwise a great story.

I'm pleased to have discovered a new series by Alex Walters (and it's currently free!!). Like the Kenny Murrain series this one is great. David McCallion has an ideal voice for narrating -- except when it comes to the English women. The scenes with Virginia Horton (Haughton?) and Aisla sound excruciating -- like some ancient English drawing room comedy -- which is completely bizarre in the middle of a Scottish police procedural and over the top for the dialogue. But that's a relatively minor blip. The story is enjoyable.

i do think Alex Walters hasn't been well served by Audible. The first book in this series is wrong listed as the first Murrain book--so i ended up starting with this one. It seems from reviews that the recording of the first book was a bit of a disaster. And now Alex has an interesting sounding new series with a female lead but the reviews of reader sound like she was disastrously miscast. Shame Audible, i think Alex deserves to be better supported.

Great! (except for the English women!)

Good story that kept me guessing to the end.
The narrator was perfect for the story. Great accent, great use of dialogue for individual characters.
Definitely worth a shot.
