About this listen

William Sullivant worked hard to buy his own Texas ranch. What he didn’t see coming, was the daughter of his neighbor rancher, beautiful, but as tough as any cowboy.

In 1886, William Sullivant, aged fifteen, and his brother become orphans when their stepfather told them he could no longer afford to feed them. With fifty cents between them saved by their mother, they walked the road to catch the ferry crossing the river to Memphis. Finn washed dishes in a saloon, but William, who disliked working indoors, found work as a stable boy. After seeing a flyer advertising a Texas ranch for sale, William knew he wanted a cowboy’s life. A man now and discontent, he saves enough to travel as far west as Arkansas. Through a chain of events, William inherited enough money to buy the Texas ranch he'd dreamed of.

Lillian Eberly, a Suffragette, strongly supports women’s’ rights. Her aggressiveness scares most men, but doesn't seem to affect her new neighbor at all. Infuriated that his rugged handsomeness and calm demeanor make her weak, the tall cowboy only makes her angry with herself for being unable to halt his advances. Now, she’s determined to put him in his place like all the other men she’d decimated with her sharp tongue.

She found reasons to ride over often and on a day of breaking broncs in a dusty corral, convinced him to let her ride one of his wild horses. Women were changing and doing anything they wanted since the suffrage move started, so he thought ‘why not.’ Exhilarated after successfully riding one of his broncs, she unexpectedly kissed him. But Lilli didn't take it lightly when he kissed her back, and not so gently. But not one to run from sassy women, he ignored her rants, and returned her constant barbed insults with kisses. Unable to best this invincible cowboy with words, she tries to distance herself from him, but William remains the proverbial burr under her saddle blanket.
