St Andrews, Scotland: when a man's preserved body is discovered in a whisky ageing cask in the local Gleneden Distillery, DCI Andy Gilchrist and his partner, DS Jessie Janes, are assigned to the investigation. But when the dead man is identified as Hector Dunmore, the once heir-apparent of Gleneden Distillery, their investigation takes a dramatic turn, for Dunmore was reported missing 25 years earlier when his Land Rover was found abandoned on the outskirts of Mallaig, almost 200 miles away on the coast. Why hide a body in a 25-year ageing cask? And who would want Dunmore dead?

Publisher's Summary
When Joe Christie's fishing boat is swept onto Tentsmuir beach during a fierce storm, a man's mutilated body is found in the hold. DCI Andy Gilchrist of St Andrews CID is called in to investigate. But his murder investigation deepens when he learns that Joe Christie and his boat have been missing for three years.
The police pathologist, Dr Rebecca Cooper, retrieves a five pound note from the dead man's throat. Is this the killer's calling card? And whatever happened to Joe Christie? Cooper offers Gilchrist a clue to the dead man's identity - a scar from a recent operation to repair a bone shattered by a bullet.
The dead man is found to have been on the payroll of big Jock Shepherd, Scotland's premier crime patriarch, and when three more of Shepherd's men turn up brutally murdered, Gilchrist fears a tectonic shift in the criminal underworld.
Gilchrist and his partner, DS Jessie Janes, set off along a murderous trail where they uncover a plot involving drug shipments and police corruption and come face to face with a man for whom human life means nothing.

Not bad but not good either
I sort of enjoyed this but have realised Andy is a very self centred man. He is on the one hand saying how much he loves his Children and then forgetting important times for them like his sons birthday hand his daughters termination. He’s really annoying and I would like to slap him.

Left Me Wanting Muir!
While this probably won't go down as one of my absolute favourites in this series it's a really decent listen. Gilchrist and his chirpy sidekick Jessie are back with a quite intriguing mystery which starts a little better than it ends. A very mysterious abandoned fishing vessel puzzles are favourite Fife detectives and meanwhile, their families and personal relationships turn up their stress levels. It is of course still the silken-tongued David Monteith at the microphone and as ever he does not disappoint in any way. It's a very enjoyable extension of a series I am really enjoying though it didn't quite catch hold of me as much as some of the previous ones. The characters just seemed slightly muted but it delivers an intriguing mystery, has genuine atmosphere and a decent ending which has a question all of its own to answer! The key thing is that when it finished it definitely left me wanting more . . .

Bit too much effing and jeffing for me ...
Also, I literally lost the plot about two-thirds of the way through ... so many characters that I couldn't recall who was who, what was what or why was why ... Finished the book eventually but it's not a favourite ... I liked the main character and his female side-kick though. Good narration (at 1.25 speed).

A bit too uninspired and familiar for me
Maybe I’ve just listened to too many of these Scots cop thrillers but they’re all starting to sound the same - burned out DCI (or similar) with broken marriage and semi wayward children, with a grumpy (but heart of gold) sergeant side kick and a boss more interested in politics/finance, tackles a complex case involving drugs, people trafficking etc and corrupt other cops, with shadowy MI5 types having a hand in it and a sinister gangster godfather figure in the background. Add minor characters and gruesome detail to taste and stir well.

Dead Loss!
I've read most of the Gillcrest series, but have become disillusioned at the later batch. Muir still has the ability to conjure some deep and fascinating stories which engage and thrill, but he now people's these with a range of very grating type characters. Cooper seems hated by most reviewer's, and her inclusion mytstifies. However 'Jessie Jane's' as Gillcrest's sidekick is the main reason I'll stop reading Muir. There is nothing to like in her, and her poor me, "I've got a Son who is deaf" diatribe is cringing. God help her if he had Leukaemia!. She is I think meant to be liked for her 'humour '..??? This to me is lost because (a) she isn't funny, and (b) it comes accross as sniping and bitching making her character abrasive unsympathetic and boringly dull. Jane as a character is nasty and lacking in depth, and is poorly developed. Her 'good girl from a wrong batch is clunking and not believable, and the addition of a deaf son seems achingly lazy and bad from an author like Muir. I suppose if I'm honest all I'll miss is the supreme David Monteath's narration.

Not for me
I really wasn't keen on this book, I found that I didn't like any of the characters, nor did the interaction between the different members of the police force seem real, I don't think that any organisation would function properly with superior officers barking at their juniors with irritation rather than holding respectful conversations. I found this book tedious and not worth the effort or time spent on it.

Not the best in series, but still a good listen
I did actually get lost in bits of this story and had to go back and re-set the scene. But it was still a good listen. I really struggle with Jessie Janes. She is so rude and aggressive and I really don’t think such behaviour would normally be tolerated. But then again, I don’t get mixed with the police so who am I to say?
