In questo lungo memoriale, che alla sua scarcerazione Oscar Wilde affidò al fedele amico Robert Ross (con il titolo di "Epistola: In Carcere et Vinculis") assistiamo ad una lunga assunzione di responsabilità alla presa di coscienza del messaggio che, suo malgrado, egli stesso poneva nelle sue opere: che non si può prendere dalla vita solo gioia e piacere, a costo di affamare la propria anima, e di costringerla ad assaporare il dolore tutto in una volta. Una grande esperienza, quella del carcere, dice lo scrittore, che può donargli il prezioso tesoro dell'umiltà.
