About this listen

From Brandon Sanderson—author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive and its fourth massive installment, Rhythm of War—comes a new hefty novella, Dawnshard. Taking place between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War, this tale (like Edgedancer before it) gives often-overshadowed characters their own chance to shine.

When a ghost ship is discovered, its crew presumed dead after trying to reach the storm-shrouded island Akina, Navani Kholin must send an expedition to make sure the island hasn't fallen into enemy hands. Knights Radiant who fly too near find their Stormlight suddenly drained, so the voyage must be by sea.

Shipowner Rysn Ftori lost the use of her legs but gained the companionship of Chiri-Chiri, a Stormlight-ingesting winged larkin, a species once thought extinct. Now Rysn's pet is ill, and any hope for Chiri-Chiri’s recovery can be found only at the ancestral home of the larkin: Akinah. With the help of Lopen, the formerly one-armed Windrunner, Rysn must accept Navani's quest and sail into the perilous storm from which no one has returned alive. If the crew cannot uncover the secrets of the hidden island city before the wrath of its ancient guardians falls upon them, the fate of Roshar and the entire Cosmere hangs in the balance.

To be honest I found large stretches this one kind of mediocre or mildly annoying, but the ending was good and has significance for the larger series. Perhaps you’ll love it from start to finish, but if not, consider increasing the playback speed.

Dawnshard was a brilliant little novella from start to finish. I really enjoyed following Rysn’s continued development after Oathbringer and loved that Lopen finally got some well-deserved time in the spotlight, his humour is always a highlight. The story was tight, engaging, and full of that classic Sanderson charm. It’s definitely gotten me excited to dive into Rhythm of War. My Rating 4.3/5

More of The Lopen!

I hit the purchase before reading the description. It did state how long it was going to be for the listening experience, so I should have known with a quick calculation that it was going to be shorter than I expected!
The story itself was quite well paced and kept to the usual attention to detail. It also held my interest to keep reading/listening.
I still feel a little disappointed that it is so short!

A bit shorter than expected.

You wanted more Lopen. You got it. Could have done with slightly more Lopen but as The Lopen would say, there's only so much Lopen one can fit into a book. The Lopen.

Lopen, Lopen. The Lopen.

More Lopen

Sanderson does it again. This time with a fantastic take from A character with challenges oft unrepresented in fantasy, using a unique skill set to take on what’s in front of her.

Comes before Rhythm of War. I’ll be rereading that next.
