Es ereignete sich, als er während einer winterlichen Truppenkonzentrierung durch mehrere Wochen auf dem alten Stadtbesitz der gräflichen Familie einquartiert war, und begann damit, dass er am Tage vor einer kurzdauernden Abkommandierung - kopfschüttelnd, weil er ihn nicht verstand, - den Schluss eines Gespräches mitanhören musste, der vom Nebenzimmer mit den fühlbar durch eine Erregung verstärkten Stimmen zweier Menschen zu ihm herübergetragen wurde.
