Ein Haus, das nicht zur typischen Stadt-Architektur passt, erweckt das Interesse des Ich-Erzählers Theodor. Eines Tages erblickt er an einem der Fenster dieses Gebäudes die Hand einer Frau und fühlt sich auf ihm selbst nicht zu erklärende Weise vom Haus und/oder der geheimnisvollen Frau angezogen. Er fängt an, von der Frau zu träumen und sieht sie sogar in seinem Taschenspiegel.
Daraufhin konsultiert er einen Arzt, der ihn einer magnetischen Kur unterzieht. Es hilft alles nichts, Theodor muss sich Zugang zum Haus verschaffen, sonst kann er seinen Seelenfrieden für immer abschreiben. Dies gelingt ihm auch, allerdings wird er von einer augenscheinlich Wahnsinnigen überrascht, die nur durch physische Gewalt zu bändigen ist, aber das Geheimnis um dieses Haus und seine Bewohner ist deswegen noch längst nicht gelüftet.
