 Georg Bendemann hat einem Freund im fernen Petersburg die Wahrheit über sein glückliches und erfolgreiches Leben bisher verschwiegen. Seine Verlobte Frieda drängt ihn nun, kurz vor der Hochzeit, dem Freund die ganze Wahrheit über sein Leben mitzuteilen und ihn zur Hochzeit einzuladen. Nachdem er den Brief geschrieben hat, geht Georg zu seinem Vater, da dieser den Freund ebenfalls kennt. Hier kommt es zum Streit und sein Vater verurteilt Georg zum Tod durch Ertrinken. Aus Wut stürzt Georg in einen nahegelegenen Fluss.
