Die Leihgabe gilt als beinah unbezahlbar, da die Steine von einmaliger Reinheit sind. Nun aber fehlen drei Smaragde, und in wenigen Tagen wird man das Diadem von ihm wieder zurückfordern.
Der öffentliche Skandal würde Holder und seine Bank ruinieren. Einen Hauptverdächtigen scheint es jedoch schon zu geben, die Beweislage gegen ihn ist erdrückend. Dieser aber schweigt zu den Vorwürfen. Sherlock Holmes bleibt nur wenig Zeit, die fehlenden Steine wieder aufzubringen. Und möglicherweise einen Unschuldigen zu entlasten.
