Publisher's Summary

Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in the new novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense, and takes on a case of death imitating art...

It was a stab in the dark.

On a chilly February night, during a screening of Psycho in midtown, someone sunk an ice pick into the back of Chanel Rylan's neck, then disappeared quietly into the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times Square. To Chanel's best friend, who had just slipped out of the theater for a moment to take a call, it felt as unreal as the ancient black-and-white movie up on the screen. But Chanel's blood ran red, and her death was anything but fictional.

Then, as Eve Dallas puzzles over a homicide that seems carefully planned and yet oddly personal, she receives a tip from an unexpected source: an author of police thrillers who recognizes the crime - from the pages of her own book. Dallas doesn't think it's coincidence, since a recent strangulation of a sex worker resembles a scene from her writing as well. Cops look for patterns of behavior: similar weapons, similar MOs. But this killer seems to find inspiration in someone else's imagination, and if the theory holds, this may be only the second of a long-running series.

The good news is that Eve and her billionaire husband Roarke have an excuse to curl up in front of the fireplace with their cat, Galahad, reading mystery stories for research. The bad news is that time is running out before the next victim plays an unwitting role in a murderer's deranged private drama - and only Eve can put a stop to a creative impulse gone horribly, destructively wrong.

From the author of Echoes in Death, this is the latest of the edgy, phenomenally popular police procedurals that Publishers Weekly calls "inventive, entertaining, and clever."

Was a bit slow overall.

2023 AUDIBLE REVIEW
Was a bit slow overall, though I enjoyed Feeney’s sulk about Jake.
The killer was just so pathetic.
UPDATED BOOK REVIEW 2021
Still enjoyable though I did find the confession over long and boring.
I did like the fact Nadine is heading in a relationship direction.
I have owned most of the earlier books in paperback for years but now have them all in eBook format, so I am rereading this series once more in order, updating and replacing missing reviews.
Even knowing what is in the future, it is absolutely no hardship to reread this series and I am really enjoying how all the characters are growing and changing.
ORIGINAL BOOK REVIEW
A thoroughly enjoyable read with quite a few laugh out loud moments for me.
A well-paced and entertaining ride along as Eve and the gang try to stop a cuckoo wanna be writer from committing another murder, in her own twisted version of how her book is better than the real authors.
Once again I really enjoyed the pace of this book. Strong and steady with a bit of hectic and some serious fan girl and boy, going on with rockstars and author celebrities appearing.
Laughed at Feeney having the sulks with Eve.
Loved when Bella was in Eve’s office and copied Eve’s swear words, how funny, cute and so true.
Some nice downtime with Roarke which I always love as it shows their relationship getting stronger and deeper. Eves attitude to the house being Somerset free was so entertaining.
Not quite sure how I have missed this one coming out months ago but better late than never.

JD Robb never disappoints

I thought I had picked the killer at the start. Ha! How could I be so arrogant! JD is better than that.

Dark in Death

As usual J D Robb as done it again, loved it.
Susan Ericksen is an awesome narrator and as she always narrates for the J D Robb series. It always amazes me that she remembers what everyone sounds like.
I really like the twist to the plot. Thank God for J D Robb and Nora Roberts she never writes a boring book or series. The Death series is the best, I have read them all.

J D Robb

Her writing keeps the reader enthralled until the end and her cast of characters not only keep growing but her ability to introduce a new member to the cast on a regular basis is exquisite

Terrible Narration

The story line seems to go nowhere but what really put me off the book was the atrocious narration and lousy voice acting. I could only take it for so long then had to give up. My wife tried in vain to listen to more of the book but she too has ditched it.
I will not purchase any more books narrated by Susan Ericksen.

Simply Boring

It is time Nora Roberts finished off this series totaly.

Have deliberately not read the last umpteen books in this series as they were heavily into " same old
same old ". Elected to check out this latest in the Eve Dallas series only to have my fears confirmed - the series is over well and truely.

Do not waste your money. If you do want to check it out get from a Library.

A challenging story

Over detailed analysis and disussion of the case between Dallas and Rourke ....took away from the exciting plotline.
