Story
A man is shot dead, and his body is dumped on the moors. His arm is stamped with the Chinese symbol for 'sorry'. There have been five unsolved murders with the same hallmark. The police can’t find any motive or connection between the victims. Bella Richards was close to the murdered man. She lives with her five-year-old son and has begun a new life in the local area. But although clearly grief-stricken, she is not telling the police everything she knows.

Story
A spate of robberies targeting elderly women is disturbing enough, but especially so in a town as peaceful and sedate as Leek. Then one attack turns to murder, and Detective Inspector Joanna Piercy is called to the eerily named Spite Hall. For the body of Nan Lawrence has been found bludgeoned to death, lying over the tapestry she was in the process of embroidering. When Joanna calls on Nan's neighbours she is surprised to find that they are none other than the old lady's estranged brother and his teenage grandson, neither of whom seems particularly willing to co-operate.

A sordid and unhappy but compelling tale!
‘The Knifeman’, a killer for hire, is leaving neat dead bodies but it’s only the tip of the iceberg as DCI Greco and his newly formed Serious Crime Squad follow the trail of bodies to a much darker international trade. Greco is as bleak as ever, still dealing with grief and betrayal over his ex-wife. Greco has brought DS Jed ‘Speedy’ Quickenden and DC Grace Harper with him and the other members of the team can feel the cliche. I almost gave this four stars, the story had so many characters to keep track of. Although the dark and tangled web was satisfying and compelling, it was hard for me to follow at times. Grace has shown herself bright and capable but I haven’t enjoyed the long story arc involving her flirty overtures towards Greco which reach a crisis point here. UK actor Nicholas Camm uses a huge variety of voices and accents to differentiate all the characters here, it was very good work (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue).

Standard crime and love mix
Greco is a real character with poor balance between life and work and desires which can compromise his professional standing. The real crime in the story takes too long to be discovered and many readers will spot it early on.But the tale rolls along nicely.I had to abandon the audio version it was so badly narrated.

Good short detective story
Enjoyingthese quick, short detective tales. Love the northern British narration which is a familiar and rough around the edges dimension that adds to the story
