Terrible whispering

Couldn’t hear half of what was said because the narrator decided it was a good idea to whisper all the time.

Like dark chocolate: bitter, rich and satisfying!

A fastidious loner with OCD, DCI Stephen Greco has not made friends with his new team at Oldston CID over the last 3 months. Greco feels he has been given a bunch of no-hopers and despairs he can whip them into shape, especially ‘Speedy’, his hard-drinking, work-shy sergeant. A local violent drug dealer is implicated when two women are found dead with their eyes missing but Greco feels like he is being led down the garden path. I was familiar with Greco from Helen Durrant’s Calladine series, where he presents as a pretty unlikeable machine. Here, sitting in Greco’s head, he seems much more human, and as flawed as the rest of us. The story is fabulous. I loved the dysfunctionality of Greco and his team who somehow perform in spite of themselves. Like a lot of Durrant’s plots, there were multiple storylines woven through each other, overlapping in places, and it was really interesting to see it all fit together. The Greco titles all start with ‘Dark’, which is apt since Greco himself is overly sombre and so is the mood within his team. UK actor Nicholas Camm narrates the audio. While he matched the mood and voiced the characters extremely well, he dramatically raises and lowers his volume to suit the emotion of the dialogue which left me scrambling to lower the volume on the shouts or having to replay sections when he whispered (the series is currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue).

Just missed the mark

The story was well thought out, but too much cruelty for me. The performance was very uneven, so couldn’t hear some of it clearly. Disappointing.

The reader whispers the crucial details - annoying

Bloody awful reader. Goes from full volume to a whisper, all in the same sentence. Tried 3 different Bluetooth speakers but could not get enough volume out of any of them to be able to hear all of it. - very frustrated.

Volume

Had trouble listening as narrator would speak very softly at times, almost whispering then speak loudly

Story ok but narrator not so much

Although this was quite a good story leaning toward gruesome as Durant's murder mysteries tend to be, the narrator's way of reading it distracted me throughout and I've since read the others myself. He seems to add too much emphasis or inflection where it is unwarranted.

Finally on Audible

Having a friend who reads these books months before they become available I've been eagerly awaiting this new Graco series. This was a good start so can't wait to get catching up. I hope that unlike the Calladine & Bayliss series, also by Helen H Durrant which I loved, all the books become available on Audible.
