A family mysteriously murdered. A haunted farmhouse. A town rich with secrets. Still on the move, Lance Brody finds himself in the tiny town of Ripton’s Grove, living in a neglected farmhouse in which, six years earlier, Mark Benchley murdered his wife and teenage daughter before turning a shotgun on himself. But while the town has accepted the Benchley family's fate, it doesn’t take long for Lance to realize there might be much more to the night the Benchley family died, and the farmhouse itself, than anybody knows. Less than 24 hours after the horrific events that forced him to flee his hometown, Lance Brody steps off a bus into a whole different nightmare. The small town of Westhaven seems ordinary on the surface, but Lance can feel the evil lurking in the air... and it knows Lance has arrived.
After meeting two new friends - one of this world, and one of another - Lance learns that young men have been disappearing from Westhaven without a trace. No clues left behind, no answers. Left with no choice but to use his unexplainable gifts - the ones that allow him to see beyond the veil and into the shadows - Lance sets out to restore peace to Westhaven before another boy can vanish... But the darkness Lance felt the moment he arrived will do everything it can to stop him. No matter the lives lost.

Good story BUT
Good story and I really enjoy the narrator's voice and performance. BUT it's very distracting to hear what's going on in the background of this narrator's house.

Sense of humor
The author's sense of humor is what I love most. Plot was a little predictable but loved hearing how it played out. The characters are easy to get close to and root for. This and the prequel are my first experiences with this author and I now plan to read or listen to all his other work.
Joe Cliff Thompson read this perfectly.
Thank you, gentlemen, for this experience.

Inconsistent, unsophisticated and a little dull
Got this as a Book 1 but it seems that to be fully in the loop you maybe need to read the prequel? If so that's a bit disappointing. However on to Book 1 - it reads like a YA novel which is okay if it gave YA's a bit of credit. Our 'hero' Lance Brody is inconsistent in his manner and speech and his love life is very juvenile. I have no idea why or how Lance ends up in this small town as it is only alluded to so I am none the wiser as to his 'gifts' as he is - hence maybe the prequel. In a nutshell young man with unspecified gifts find himself in small town and solves missing boys mystery within a day or two - a bit far fetched. Also he has run ins with the police and others and this is never followed up. I really hate that - follow through for goodness sake. The supernatural element is worthy of a pre teen novel and by the end I didn't really care much what happened to him. To many instances of ' its like' or 'just like' when describing things for 'my liking'. Onto the actual recording - in a word - bad. Sounds like it was recorded in the narrators back kitchen with many noises off. Also repetition - surely that's an editors job. Pretty much failed in this instance. Needless to say I will not be picking up Book 2 and may even return this one.
