Publisher's Summary

Betrayed by those she trusted, penniless and alone, Darcie Finch is forced to accept a position no one else dares as assistant to dangerously attractive Dr. Damien Cole. Ignoring the whispered warnings and rumors he's a man to fear, she takes her position at his eerie estate, where she quickly discovers nothing is at it seems, least of all her handsome and brooding employer. As Darcie struggles with her fierce attraction to Damien, she must also deal with the blood, the disappearances...and the murders.

With her options dwindling and time running out, Darcie must rely on her instincts as she confronts the man with whom she is falling in love. Is he an innocent and misunderstood man...or a remorseless killer who prowls the East End streets?

Blah Blah Blah Blah.. Geez..

So this was an okay story. Barely. The dialogue was seriously lacking. Too much inner thoughts the ran on and on and on. At one point I was yelling "get to the point"! ugh. The story line and plot had potential. But the writing style was not for me. Trying to keep you guessing and guessing and guessing and it became long and tedious. The chemistry between Damien and Darcie just did not feel right. It was forced and and did not feel genuine at all. This book could have been shortened by about 3 hours had the filler thought nonsense been removed. Seriously, people do speak to each other, just not in this book. This book was written in the third person but might as well have been written in the first person from Darcie's POV because that was really all you got. I can' recommend this book at all. I am surprised I even finished it. As for the narration, It was good. I enjoyed that. Billie Fulford-Brown did a good job. the few voices she read were good. I say that because it was all internal dialogue from Darcie's head. She has a nice reading voice.

Romance. Suspense. Mystery. The narrator does a beautiful job of bringing the characters to life.

Dark Desires

Loved it. The story seems to be happening during the time of the murders at White Chapple. It keeps you guessing until the end if Damion the man Darcy falls in love with is the murderer or not. I may want to read it again to make sure I missed nothing.

Fun Gothic; Great Narration

Wonderfully gothic. Darcie is a young gentlewoman down on her luck. She obtains a maid-of-all-work position in the household of Dr Damien Cole and eventually becomes an illustrator for his anatomical studies. The novel is set in Victorian London during the time of Jack the Ripper and there are similar murders in Whitechapel. The author does a good job of setting up Darcie so she doesn't know whether the doctor is evil, or whether she should listen to her heart which is telling her to fall in love with him. Classic gothic struggle! The attraction between Darcie and Damien was a little weak, and the middle of the book dragged, but overall it was a fun plunge into the gothic world of Victorian London. And the narrator was fantastic.

Not quite...anything

It wasn't terrible. It wasn't good. The narrator is decent but pronounces things strangely (obviously I am not referncing British versus American English differences.) The writing itself is decent. The story isn't bad. But it's quite difficult to like any of the characters, or to hate them. There is no chemistry. It is completely unclear why the characters would be together at all, much less drop their pants and have hot monkey sex. The heroine is kind of a drip. The hero is kind of cardboard. There is far too much repetition in the heroine's endless internal monologs. I used to read the old timey Gothics and disappointingly, this was not that. Not enough suspense, not enough atmosphere, not enough charactetizaion to get the reader invested. Just a random dumbish girl jumping into bed a lot with beautiful corpse-disecting doctor she barely knows and frequently believes to be Jack the Ripper. It was no more than mostly OK. I won't pursue the series.
