Editorial Reviews

Dangerous blazes with the same lusty savagery as the courtship of fireflies in summer; all single-minded flash and glow, mating to the death during twilight. The latest in romance novelist Diana Palmer’s “Long, Tall Texans” series of Western bodice rippers, Dangerous is narrated by Phil Gigante, who coolly ripples from shrinking violet Winnie Sinclair’s wistful Lone Star twang to FBI agent McKuen Kilraven’s urgent, glowering commands. The effect thaws the audiobook’s icy murder plots somewhat, like hot tub vapors in the snow.

In the grand tradition of escapist fiction, Dangerous circles around a mismatched couple bound by sorrow and animal attraction both. Our heroine is doe-eyed Winnie Sinclair, a virginal 22-year-old heiress who works as a 911 dispatcher, despising the second sight inherited from her abandoning mother. FBI Agent Kilraven is the sphinxlike, haunted man Winnie craves. He’s monkish and mercurial, still grieving the murders of his wife and daughter seven years before. And when a dead body washes up in the local river, two cold cases surface along with the corpse. Kilraven is convinced the same killer blasted away his own family. He proposes a “temporary marriage” to Winnie, to get access to her estate in the Bahamas, where he suspects the homicidal monster is hiding. As Kilraven and Winnie investigate, they plunge into a relationship as perilous as the crimes they’re flaming out.

Gigante’s textured rendering of Winnie’s hometown of Jacobsville, Texas, is a peppery broth of lazy cadences and dawdling, drop-off sentences. In an observant touch, Gigante resists broadening dialect for cheap laughs. His only misstep is ascribing a flattened, Canadian-sounding accent to Jon Blackhawk, Kilraven’s Native American half-brother. Odd, but certainly not damning. Truly, the most dangerous thing about this audiobook is resisting the impulse to pause on the make-out scenes. —Nita Rao

Publisher's Summary

Tall, lean and headstrong, FBI agent Kilraven lives by his own rules. And one of those rules includes keeping his hands off Jacobsville’s resident sweetheart, Winnie Sinclair, no matter the temptation. Shy and innocent, Winnie couldn’t handle a man like him – a merciless man with a haunted past. And this small town may hold not only the woman he fights to resist, but the answers to a cold case that is very personal to Kilraven.

Winnie has had her own share of sorrow and senses Kilraven’s pain. Even though she tries to deny it, the gentle 911 operator feels a connection with the darkly handsome agent. When he makes the disturbing discovery that her family’s unsavory past might have a bearing on his case, Winnie is determined to help him crack it…and the ice around his heart.

As they combine forces in a dangerous investigation, the stakes rise ever higher. Winnie’s life is on the line, and she’ll need Kilraven more than ever. But if they are to have a future together, her ruthless Texan will need to confront his past and risk it all for their love.

Kilraven put up a good fight, but his heart WON!

What made the experience of listening to Dangerous the most enjoyable?

Diana did a great job, as usual! I love Alphas who put up a really good show of being stubborn and in the end, Love does conquer all. Beautiful job Mr. Gigante!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Winnie, hands down. Love to see a woman grow.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Winnie stands up to Boone!

Great fit for character and narrator.

If you have ever seen a movie trailer and then watched the movie and realized all the good bits were in the trailer, then that's kind of like this book. I loved the characters and the plot was good but all the really good interaction with these characters seemed to be in the previous books leading up to this book. It just seemed to all happen but with no real fizz for me.
However having said all that I own the hardcover and the audio book and the kindle version because I really do like the book as a whole and it is on my keeper list. The best part of the book is the narrator. He does a fabulous job and manages to have just the right tones of voice for the funny, serious, sexy and menacing parts. Go ahead and buy it and enjoy it, I did.

No Stars Had it Not Been for the Narrator!

I wasn't drawn to this book for the story as much as I was the narrator. Phil Gigante is magic! He did an excellent job protraying Kilraven, turing an otherwise disagreeable and sometimes downright unlikable character into someone who was occationallly hot and sexy!

I often tire of Diana Palmer's archaic way of protraying the male-female dynamic (which was
ridiculous and often insulting in this story), and I know I would not have finished listening to this book had it not been for my appreciation for Phil Gigante's work. Catch him in the "Highlander" series by Karen Marie Moning. What he does to a Scottish accent is sinfuly delicious!

I NEED MORE PHIL GIGANTE IN MY LIFE!!!!

I've read at least 15 books by Diana Palmer because there's something in her writing that's addicting. Recently I started the whole audiobook thing and part of me still prefers to read it instead of listening to it but I've got to say this book will be a favorite of mine because of the way it was narrated. Phil Gigante was just brilliant and I'm so in love with his voice I feel like looking up for more and stuff he's done just to listen to him!!!!!

ABUSIVE COWBOYS & Insecure Women

just awful. I'm sorry but I've read over 10 titles of hers and there is the EXACT SAME PLOT AND CHARACTER IN HER BOOKS.

read here for spoilers in EVERY book:

1. insecure FBI, CIA, cowboy, ranch hand or sherriff has hard exterior and between 35 and 40 yrs of age. interested in the barley legal woman testing what 21 is.

2. hates women, relationships, marriage and hides behind tough guy jokes and pride. constantly accusing women of using them to get money. but secretly loves this 1 woman in their station or place of business. (ever hear not dipping the oen in company inc.?) apparently the author hasn't!

3. for some reason...they all play xbox and wwc. they are antisocial and very secretive. there is an immature childish quality about these men that is not believable with the story. like... ok you are a bad ass dangerous man ... but u play video games for 8 hours straight and expect me to take u seriously... um...ok...

4. women are damaged goods.beaten or scarred emotionally or physically who come from socially awkward pasts that all have some for of rape, abuse or torture crippling them into nothingness . oh and did I mention.. they are all wealthy in their own rights!

5. sex in these books are the biggest JOKE of all. 1st of all...every girl is just that...a young girl with a perfectly intact hymen and SPOILER ALERT!! THEY ALL GET PREGNANT 1ST TIME! I know.... shocking! men who cant restrain their urges and plow through even when they know they shouldn't are called RAPISTS. no means no! period! and boinking some girl who could be your daughters age is messed up. seriously...no wonder phil gigante got arrested for proposing sex to minors! look at the stuff he is forced to read?!

6. Male lead degrades and verbally beats down the girl claiming its HER fault for making him crazy and horny and then suddenly cant control himself and seduces the girl. confuses her to NO END and gets off only to put her down again and downplay what they shared?! are you freaking kidding me?! oh and don't forget that after getting her teeth kicked in loving the impossible man...he comes back after months and finds her pregnant and suddenly he's all better and LOVES her desperatly... and what does the female do you ask? STARES AT HIM WITH AWE AND BLINDLY FORGIVES AND BELEIVES HE LOVES YOU.

this has to stop! women cant read this and think it's the real world. it's not. author obviously loved a man 10 years older than her and treated her ehh..and she keeps painting same picture. didn't know so many delicate virgins who go through severe physical trauma had intact hymens! dude I lost mine when I was 10 riding my bike! stop insulting us and painting bad pictures for young women reading this nonsense.

LADIES PAY ATTENTION... if a man loves you...there wouldn't be even a death sentence to stop him from being by your side. dont fall for the example of men in these series. it's not realistic and caters to abusing women like sport. find better fantasy worlds that make YOU feel like the best part of you. those are influential books that plant the right seeds for romantic happiness. set your foundation correctly for non abusive relationships.

Dangerous

The narration was done well. Overall reading flowed well. The southern accents weren't exceptional but weren't annoying.

Almost always like Diana Palmer books and this book has a good storyline and doesn't get overly wordy.
