Story
An elderly lady loses her money on an investment; a conjuror is pursued by thugs; and a clairvoyant mentions the name of the richest man in Europe and his mysterious company. Seemingly unconnected events set Sally Lockhart on the trail of an evil far more awful than she could ever imagine. This thriller, by the author of The Ruby in the Smoke, evokes its 19th century setting and at the same time remains remarkably contemporary in the originality of its plot and larger-than-life characters.

Publisher's Summary
Penguin presents the audio edition of Daemon Voices, written and read by Philip Pullman, with an introduction by Simon Mason.
In over 30 essays, written over 20 years and recorded by the author himself in his home city of Oxford, one of the world's great storytellers meditates on the art of storytelling. Warm, engaging and often amusing collection of writing which offers thoughts on a wide variety of topics, including the origin and composition of Philip's own stories, the craft of writing and the storytellers who have meant the most to Philip. The art of storytelling is everywhere present in the essays themselves, in the instantly engaging tone, the vivid imagery and striking phrases, the resonant anecdotes, the humour and learnedness. Together, they are greater than the sum of their parts: a single sustained engagement with story and storytelling.

Inspiring, provocative lectures and thoughts.
It helps to be a fan/reader of Pullman's work, though the context of discussed scenes is given throughout. I found this rather fascinating, as through a series of unconnected (sometimes loosely) connected lectures and talks, we are treated to insights into the writing process for Pullman, children's literature, his views on religions and connections to his work. And more.
Pullman's academic background is evident as he talks confidently about his varied subjects, coming across as credible and personable as he reads his own writing (audiobook). He's a calm and knowledgeable narrator, a good Audible reader.
There is no plot, it really is a collection of writings. I had some favourites, and did pick up some tips on writing as well as learning about Pullman's history and that of his books. I did skip a couple but only because I was not familiar with the books/people they focused on. Mostly, I was caught up in Pullman's subjects.
This works brilliantly as an audiobook as each essay was designed to be listened to originally, therefore they lose nothing when recorded for audiobook customers.
One for fans of Pullman's work but also those interested in the writing process and gaining tips from a perceptive writer and thinker.
With thanks to Nudge Books, for providing a sample Audible copy.

Enjoyable if you're interested in the subject
The cover of the book explains exactly what this is. It's a collection of essays. The majority are quite interesting and well read by the author. And they have been collated well into a logical order. Beyond storytelling, the author goes into other subjects such as morality and religion. Many of the essays are very similar but you can skip through whichever are not of interest to you. The author clearly has set opinions which can be presented in a very matter-of-fact or arrogant manner. I found this a little annoying but the author is clearly a very successful person so maybe can justify the arrogance. I'm a big fan of Philip Pullman and, on the whole, I enjoyed this audiobook.

Great insight into a great story teller
This book is a great insight into how Philip Pullman imagines and writes his stories. Perfect for literary students of all ages. He gives an insight into how his ideas come to life, how they manage to appear on the page as they should and how accidents in writing makes good stories. A natural born writer and thinker, Philip Pullman gives an honest opinion on his works and methods of writing a good story. Of course, none of us think quite the same and being able to pull off similar masterpieces as he does would be fortunate indeed. Enjoyable.

First half is fantastic, second half too religious
The first half of this audiobook is fantastic, he offers a lot of good advice regarding what makes, and how to compose, a good story. The second half takes a nose-dive in quality; it is a very drawn-out and repetitive criticism of religion.
