Charles Perrault nació en París el 12 enero de 1628, junto a su hermano gemelo, en el seno de una familia perteneciente a la alta burguesía. Participó en la creación de la Academia de las Ciencias y en la restauración de la Academia de Pintura. Desde 1663, fue secretario de la Academia Francesa. Escribió cuarenta y seis obras, aunque es el género de los Cuentos de hadas, el que lo consagra como escritor. Publicados en 1697, Historias o Cuentos del tiempo pasado o Cuentos de mi madre la Oca, son representativos de su gran genio literario. En ellos, tiñó de magia algunos lugares que le eran familiares, como por ejemplo el Castillo de Ussé en La Bella Durmiente. Las hadas , Caperucita Roja, La Bella durmiente del Bosque, Barba Azul, Piel de Asno, Cenicienta, El Gato con Botas y Pulgarcito, son representativos de este género.
