About this listen

Forged in blood, this is how legends begin. . . From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Jack Carr brings the worlds of special operations and CIA paramilitary units into direct collision in the jungles of Vietnam with his explosive new thriller introducing young Navy SEAL Tom Reece.

'Jack Carr is the real deal' Andy McNab
‘Seriously good. I mean – seriously’ Lee Child
‘A tale so gripping you’ll have trouble putting it down’ Daily Express
'With a particular line in authentic tradecraft, this fabulously unrelenting thrill-ride was a struggle to put down' Mark Dawson

1968. A time of division. A time of civil unrest. A time of war.

Tom Reece, a SEAL operator attached to the highly classified and shadowy MACV-SOG, is about to be thrust into a bloody battle.

A spy ship, the USS Pueblo, is captured by communist forces off the coast of North Korea. The crew thought they had destroyed everything of intelligence value. They were wrong.

As teams of special operators infiltrating into Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam disappear without a trace, an ambitious Soviet advisor launches an ingenious plan with consequences that reach far beyond the battlefields of Southeast Asia, one that will forever alter the world balance of power.

From the Kremlin to the White House, from the streets of Saigon to the rugged A Shau Valley, along the paths of Ho Chi Minh Trail and into the secret war in Laos, Tom Reece has an official mission assigned by Military Assistance Command, Vietnam-Studies and Observations Group, but it’s his unofficial mission that might get him killed.

Loved it! Great detail, story line and character building and gives you a clear picture of why James Reece turned out the way he is. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!

I wasn't sure about this being about Dad's origin story as I wanted more of the series I had come to love and was impatient for the next James Reece instalment. Not ashamed to admit that I'm addicted to the novels and the tv series. I also usually avoid Vietnam novels as the brutal POW tactics, loss of life and the way the veterans were treated when they returned home saddens me greatly - they sacrificed too and should have been embraced as heroes who served their countries as past vets were in previous wars. I was hesitant but I love this author and narrator team so much that I decided to trust them and I'm so glad I did. Meticulously researched, great characters brought to life by Ray's talent and gaining insight into the father of our beloved Reece made it another hit for me but the biggest surprise was that I really enjoyed learning things about the Vietnam war that I didn't know before. I found myself looking up maps and gaining insights into the political powers at play that were pulling strings and prolonging a war that would have ended very differently without their covert military support. Thank you Mr Carr for providing a deeper perspective, for educating me about the Vietnam war and for delivering another brilliant novel. Please write another Reece novel ASAP but if Tom's journey is to become a series too I will not hesitate for a second to purchase the next instalment.

Brilliant and insightful

Took a little to warm up, but once it got going it was a great ride. Looking forward to the next Tom Reece story. Hoping one day you’ll circle back to James Reece and give him one more chapter.

Another banger from Jack Carr. Part shoot em up with echos of John Le Carre and poignant commentary about the Vietnam war. I found myself going off on tangents to research various events and locations. Carr is at the top of his game with this one.

Enjoyable war epic that feels like it was written for the screen. Cinematic action with depth of research evident.
