Publisher's Summary

I thought getting shot, losing my memory, and being hunted by people I didn't know for reasons I couldn't remember was rock bottom. Turns out I was wrong. I found a shovel, dug a little deeper, and found a whole new sublevel of suck.

Apparently, I took something from the Formicary that doesn't belong to me. The boss, Petar Dobroslav, is willing to do just about anything to get it back. Making an enemy of a super-secret organization of assassins might seem like a bad idea and . . . well, it absolutely is.

To be honest, it was inevitable that Grayson Laurie would get dragged into my mess. In my line of work, love is a luxury, a vulnerability I can't afford. But I couldn't stay away, and now we're both paying the price.

But I can fix this. I will fix this. Everyone knows the Formicary is a formidable adversary. It's time to remind them that so is Christian Cross.

Story continued

Wonderfully narrated. Awesome story as it continues their journey from book one. Impressive twists n turns with a never ever ending love. Altho there was an ending, I hold hopes for a continuation

Enjoyable but a missed opportunity

To save Grayson Laurie, the love of his life, Christian ‘Chrysalis’ Cross must battle his evil grandfather who heads the Formicary, an enhanced genetics and metahuman project creating an army of mercenary assassins. This can’t be read as a standalone and I enjoyed it more than the first book because I knew what to expect and accepted the plot holes and where the books are coming from more. I still think SE Harmon missed an opportunity for a truly great emotional series by setting a light, jokey tone amongst heavy themes of murder, suicide, and ‘science gone mad’ - I could appreciate the jokes this time around but they undermine believability in the characters’ personalities and make them harder to relate to because they don’t seem to take their situations seriously. The audiobook was both better and worse than the first one. I thought audio narrator Kai Rubio really improved his game, he sounded fun and enthusiastic. Unfortunately, there are a lot of flashbacks in this story as Christian regains his memories. On the page these sections are italicised, but on the audiobook there’s no time/date announcement or even a pause that the next paragraph starts a memory and it’s quite discombobulating.
