About this listen

Discover the origins of the classic rivalry between Spike and Vicious amongst the dark underbelly of Mars, 2061, in this prequel novel to the upcoming Netflix series Cowboy Bebop.

The year is 2061. The Red Dragon Crime Syndicate is king, and for all those lucky enough to be members of this crime family, life is damn good.

Well, not for everyone.... For two entry-level gangsters in Tharsis City, Mars, life in the Syndicate isn’t quite all guns and glamour. That’s right. Long before they were mortal enemies, Spike Spiegel and Vicious were just two friends clawing their way up the crime ladder and trying to have a little fun while doing it.

But when an opportunity to pull a job for their boss arises, it’s make-or-break time. Literally. All they have to do is deliver a suitcase. How hard could it be?

You ready for some history tellin'...space cowboy?

Firstly, I would love to acknowledge audible, the publisher and also for allowing this piece to be recorded.

For person with a visual impairment and is so heartwarming to have these more modern books turned into audiobooks so that I can still engage with the fictional world. And find some escapism.

When I was younger, my vision was a lot better. So I remember watching this animation on TV. In fact are used to rent Annamae videos from the local video store so that I could engage with these animations. As this is what I grew up with in the 80s and 90s.

Recently, I was so excited to hear about the Netflix special of Cowboy bebop. But now that my vision is a lot worse. I rely on audio description so that I can engage with the content. I really appreciate that, but, it’s not perfect and doesn’t quite hit the mark in regards to my previous experience with this world.

But now reading this book it’s open this world straight back up for me.

And has also given me a lot of background into things that I always have questions with from the cartoon.

From the person who read the audiobook to the content to that style of writing. I can’t say anything better. It was engaging, it had all the elements that I enjoy out of an audiobook. Which are great reading style, appropriate voices for different characters, great understanding of the world and most importantly and engaging tone when describing the world.

I look forward to searching through the catalogue for more stories such as the remind me and give me a lot more nostalgia of my past. And hopefully something that I can also engage with my son and daughter with as they are starting to explore stories themes and characters outside the norm.

Enjoyed this enough to binge it in one session. Anything Cowboy Bebop and I’m in. Can’t say this is on the level of the original, but it was enjoyable enough of a tale to stand on its own. Not half-bad. If you’re into the idea of building on the franchise with a net instalment, you’ll almost certainly like it.

Solid tale

I have been waiting for the viscous & fearless back story. And I was not disappointed.

This is a run of the mill b side story that feels like the author had cooked it up before being commissioned for the cowboy bebop writing job. Its a standard mob goon "who is trying to kill us?" action story and honestly, the only relation it has to cowboy bebop is the name of the characters and some of the sci fi background. The characters don't talk or act like Spike and Vicious. The book does a good job of ruining the mystic of Spike and Vicious, so, highly recommend avoiding this if you're sensitive to alternate media ruining things for you. The narration is fine which is why I gave this book an extra star.

Basically a mob story
