Teacher and former rugby league player Chris Dawson appeared to have it all - a loving family and a beautiful home in Sydney's Northern Beaches. But in the summer of 1982 his wife Lynette disappeared and not long afterwards Dawson married a much younger woman, a former student. Less than a decade later this young woman escaped the marriage and went to the police to record her suspicions that Dawson had been involved in Lynette's disappearance. A homicide investigation followed but got nowhere until 1998, when Detective Sergeant Damian Loone was handed Lynette's file.

Publisher's Summary
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
For the first time, discover the unedited truth about the Duggars, the traditional Christian family that captivated the nation on TLC’s hit show 19 Kids and Counting. Jill Duggar and her husband Derick are finally ready to share their story, revealing the secrets, manipulation, and intimidation behind the show that remained hidden from their fans.
Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines. She didn’t protest the strict model of patriarchy that her family followed, which declares that men are superior, that women are expected to be wives and mothers and are discouraged from attaining a higher education, and that parental authority over their children continues well into adulthood, even once they are married.
But as Jill got older, married Derick, and they embarked on their own lives, the red flags became too obvious to ignore.
For as long as they could, Jill and Derick tried to be obedient family members—they weren’t willing to rock the boat. But now they’re raising a family of their own, and they’re done with the secrets. Thanks to time, tears, therapy, and blessings from God, they have the strength to share their journey. Theirs is a remarkable story of the power of the truth and is a moving example of how to find healing through honesty.

A candid dive
A Candid Dive into Jill Duggar's Life in "Counting the Cost"
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Jill Duggar's audiobook, "Counting the Cost," pulls back the curtain on her life beyond the spotlight of "19 Kids and Counting." Despite not being familiar with the Duggar family dynamics, I found the book accessible and engaging.
Jill briefly touches on her childhood, swiftly navigating through key moments such as meeting Derek, their wedding, the birth of their children, and their mission work in El Salvador. The narrative takes a compelling turn when Jill opens up about the growing tensions between herself, Derek, and her father, Jim Bob.
While my initial expectation leaned towards a more tell-all approach, I appreciated the book's matter-of-fact tone and its avoidance of unnecessary blame. Instead of delving into the darker aspects of Jill's life, such as abuse or exploitation, the focus remains on her personal journey and gradual distancing from the beliefs instilled by the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP).
Despite evident strain in her relationship with Jim Bob, Jill's support for her family remains clear. The book portrays Jim Bob negatively, prompting me to consider the reviewer's suggestion that an investigation into his financial dealings with his children might be necessary, given Jill's perspective.
Jill's forgiving perspective on her mother, Michelle, stands out, particularly regarding the family's attempts to cover up instances of abuse. While grappling with personal difficulty in forgiving such actions, I admire Jill's resilience, finding strength in her relationship with Derek and progressively breaking free from her family's constraints.
In conclusion, "Counting the Cost" delivers a candid exploration of Jill Duggar's life, addressing the challenges of family dynamics and personal beliefs. While a deeper exploration of certain issues might have been welcomed, the book's honesty, straightforward tone, and Jill's determination to carve her own path make it a commendable read.

Heart wrenching read,
Such a fabulous book by Jill. I’ve followed along since the beginning of the show, and so much in this book explained some of the concerns I had across the years…. But it also highlighted the love and support within the family… especially from Michelle. 💙 God is good.. all the time ! He is also the God of reconciliation ! 💙

I used to watch the show briefly, and Jill was always my favourite. This story was beautifully narrated and explains so many heartbreaks and untruths spoken about her. I applaud Jill for her courage in standing up against those who have done wrong by her as well as educating herself and working through past and present traumas. I wish you and your family all the best xx

A Naive Account from a Reality TV Personality
This is a personal account from one of the main characters in the 19 Kids and Counting saga. You do have to be familiar with the show and it would help if you follow any podcasts / channels on IBLP. You really feel for Jill!! She comes off as so naive and totally under-educated; from her being a sister-mother, “home schooled” (if you can call it that), to not understanding how a widely popular show generates revenue even after marrying someone with a finance degree and that there is gang violence in El Salvador (😒). This is an up close view of how this cult keeps women sheltered, ignorant and pregnant, only valued as a minor player in a male dominated play. I appreciate how she doesn’t shy away and lightly discusses the SA committed by her brother. The only bone I have to pick is that she completely glosses over how she played a part in the lies. She lied in the Megan Kelley interview about the abuse and how it only happened in her sleep, which was an outright lie. She clearly read a script for that interview not to mention lying to viewers for years, showcasing how great conservative Christianity is when it was so damaging to her personally even causing her mental distress and what sounds like undiagnosed panic attacks.
In summary - just like reality TV this is mildly entertaining but Jill still acts like everyone else in this cult - blameless. She blames someone else for everything. Nothing is her fault and accountability is still lacking even in retrospection.

Engaging, informative & incredibly honest… yet full of grace.
Found Jill’s story to inspire empathy for the costs of patriarchal fundamentalism / the IBLP. Jill not only draws attention to its impact on her own family, but for all those impacted by religious cults. Jill doesn’t shy away from condemning the egregious abuse that is so often overlooked in these circles. Yet she continues to demonstrate tact, support and love for her family and faith without offering any excuses/justifications.
In conclusion, I found this very informative and interesting. Even as a casual watcher without any religious background. 10/10. Excellent read. Highly recommends

Raw and Honest
Jill reads this story like a girlfriend you’re having coffee with telling you about her life. She is raw, real and honest even when it hurts. It’s amazing how she’s able to reminisce on the beauties of her childhood while opening painful wounds and uncovering lies, deception and betrayal that were buried beneath. I started and finished listening to this book all in one day, I simply could not go to sleep until I finished it. Rather you’re a longtime follower of the Duggars, have only read the tabloids or just enjoy a good memoir this is the book for you.

Excellent!
This book was excellent. She told everything everyone's been wondering and talking about for so long, only now we have the truth instead of absurd speculations. It was hard for me to listen to because I also grew up in Bill Gothard's ATIA/IBLP cult, but what she said about them was truth. Everything was perfect on the outside in that group, but it was filled with really dysfunctional families. That's why you're finally hearing from the grown children of some of those families. They're fed up of being fake, controlled, and miserable. I love that Jill is taking control of her life yet still trying to make amends with her family. Read this book. You won't regret it. I loved the audio because Jill read it herself and you could hear her emotion in her voice. I found myself crying as I remembered my own experience in the IBLP/IFB cult.

I'm glad she got to tell her truth.
I share zero common interests with her. I don't even share most of her views on religion. I found this book very interesting from a child-raising perspective. The controlling house she lived in and how it shaped her early adulthood was eye-opening. Overall, I thought it was a good listen and I'm glad she found her voice.

Raw, brutally honest, and heartbreaking.
After reading reviews of the book Jinger released this year, I was a little skeptical. However, I’ve always thought Jill stood monolith in the shadow of the Duggar machine, and I’m glad I gave this book a shot.
Jill’s conviction in being “real” resulted in a poignant and candid introspection. This is less of a “tell all,” and more of a catharsis, and she deserves that.
As someone processing a similarly toxic relationship with my family (though not for religious reasons; I have been an atheist for a long time), I found myself relating deeply to the confusion and pain she expresses. As much as she tries to maintain a neutral tone in her delivery, you can hear pangs of hurt sneak into her voice.
Between that and her continuing recovery from the trauma related to the IBLP teachings, her resilience is inspiring. The book is definitely worth a read/listen, and hearing it directly from her made it that much more impactful.

Beautifully written!
I LOVED reading her book. She did a great job of writing about her childhood, abuse, relationships with her parents and unnamed friends, family, and her faith.
When watching the Duggars on their various shows, I always wondered what the girls went through, as I was able to pick up on the tension between Josh and his siblings. Hearing her side of things really solidified my suspicions about the emotional and mental abuse she endured for years.
I am happy for her to escape from the trauma, and controlling behaviors of her father.

An emotional, moving and surprising memoir
A huge well done, Jill. Such an emotional, frequently moving and surprising memoir. I take my hat off to you. You communicated your story in a measured/balanced way, with sensitivity, intelligence, integrity, depth of feeling and assurance. I feel deeply for you and hope you, Derek and your children have a future filled with love, health and happiness. I'm an atheist but feel your book is for everyone, irrespective of faith. I have a difficult relationship with my family and parts of your story resonated. Thank you.

Sorry, this is a snooze fest
I had pre-ordered this title after having watched both the Duggar series and the recent documentary. I was keen to get some insight into this extraordinary family and the relationships therein. I didn't get either. All I got was a warning not to sign anything before getting a solicitor.
The author was easy to listen to, but the content and her soothing, gentle tones caused me to drop off several times as I soldiered on to get to the end. I failed and gave up well before the final chapters.

long over due
All I can say is wow Jill, this book is amazing and your personality shines through and it is clear that this has come from a place of love your family and beliefs. You have poured your heart and soul into your writing I am so glad listened to your audio book as well as reading it. I would recommend this to anyone that is a fan of 19 kids or counting on as it gives clarity to a lot of situation we witnessed on TV and shows people in their true light.

Brilliant insight to the real story of the Duggers
I could put the earphone down, listening to Jill herself made it all the more real. You could hear the emotion in some of the stories. Just a daughter trying to find the best way through life. I ope she writes more and I feel it’s important to lift the lid of how controlling these people can be.

Brave and heartfelt
I'm so glad Jill wrote this book, it hopefully was as cathartic as her counselling was.
As a long time viewer who initially liked the show because of some of their values and loving experiencing different cultures, I have been waiting for, hoping for,one of the girls so let down by the system, reality tv's lack of child protection and by so many adults including their parents to break free from the cult and live their own life.
Her bravery in confronting her father and eventually writing this book is incredible.
I was pleased to see some of her childhood was as fun as it seemed to an outsider and I'm glad Jill has been able to recognise there was a better way too deal with her brother than her father chose and that ultimately the show and Josh were more important than her life choices
This book is sensitively written giving her truth, her husband's truth and still respecting her parents. I'm glad she has retained a relationship with Her mum and some of Her siblings.
Her father made bad decisions that have left lasting impact on Jill and her brother clearly was enabled instead of receiving sufficient punishments. Very sad for all involved.
Here's hoping more of Her sisters marry outside the cult and Her siblings all wake up to the same realisations as Jill

Very interesting read
I think Jill and Derrick are very brave standing upto Jim Bob. Jim Bob appears to be very controlling and akways found him quite sleepy the way he was with Michelle. I think he also controls her 100%
it's great that Jill and some of her other sisters have chosen to make their own decisions in life. Unlike the rest of the adult children who appear to be sheep, especially Jana!
Good luck with everything Jill and Derrick, I think your an inspiration
