The setting and plot for this novel has an unusual take on vampires and witches. it is not a place recognisable, or can be compared to, in similar fantasy novels. Set in a small town in the north west corner of the US, part of the plot revolves around the mystery of the crows. This intrigue permeates the story and only at the end are they revealed for their significance to the plot. Witchcraft and vampires are the norm and the reader becomes enthralled in this narrative throughout the book. There’s many a double crossing happening to the characters and lots of magic spun, in this ‘original’ series first book. You will want to read the second immediately after finishing this one. Wonderful narration by Trei Taylor.
