Publisher's Summary

*THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER*

*A Financial Times Book of the Year*

*Economist Book of the Year*

Few journalists have covered Donald Trump more extensively than Maggie Haberman. And few better understand the polarizing 45th president or his motivations. In this astonishing, illuminating book, Haberman reveals all about Trump the man, the president and the phenomenon.

Interviews with hundreds of sources and with Trump himself portray a complicated and often contradictory figure. Capable of kindness but relying on casual cruelty as it suits his purposes. Pugnacious. Insecure. Lonely. Vindictive. Menacing. Smarter than his critics contend and colder and more calculating than his allies believe. A man who embedded himself in popular culture for decades, laying the groundwork to galvanize support for a successful run for high office.

Chronicling Trump’s entire career, from his rise in New York City to his tortured post-presidency and potential comeback, Confidence Man is a magnificent, disturbing reckoning of the president who pushed American democracy to the brink.

Critic Reviews

‘A devastating portrait’ Economist

‘Maggie Haberman, the New York Times’ Trump whisperer, delivers. Her latest book is much more than 600 pages of context, scoop and drama. It is a political epic, tracing Donald Trump’s journey from the streets of Queens to Manhattan’s Upper East Side, from the White House to Mar-a-Lago, his Elba. There, the 45th president holds court – and broods and plots his return.’ Guardian

‘[Confidence Man] will be a primary source about the most vexing president in American history for years to come… [Haberman] is an exemplar of her craft, relentless, judicious and even-keeled.’ New York Times

Well written but so boring

Obviously well written by a great journalist. The problem I had was Haberman is the narrator. Listening to passionless reporting for 5 minutes on TV is A LIT different than listening to her drone on for 17 + hours.

Worth a read -

I’m on the other side of the world - quite removed from American politics, but I do find it fascinating and sometimes unbelievable. Easy to listen to with so many interesting stories and observations. The story is far from over and I’m hopeful that the future is a more peaceful one.

Top content but one-tone narration puts one to sleep.

The content of the book is first class. I have read/listened to a lot of books on the Florida man but they don’t compare to the quality of the content in this book. It is obvious that Maggie Haberman is a trusted journalist with excellent sources and she has interwoven their information very well into her book.

The book is well worth reading … in print. Unfortunately, I love listening to audiobooks and had bought it as an audiobook.

I don’t think the author has the right voice and speaking style for narrating, even if it the book is her own. Mono-tone (hence the adjective”monotonous”) reading doesn’t cut it except maybe for sleepy time tales. I lose track of the number of times I fell asleep listening to Maggie Haberman talking and have to go back to find my place. This time, I actually slept to the END of the book, hence am given the opportunity to write a review!

I will be marking this audiobook as “Unfinished” as I do love the content. I shall just have to go back to find where Maggie’s soporific narration had worked its magic on me!!

Deeply insightful expose’

This is an excellent work exploring the entire life of a thoroughly dislikable and flawed man and the toadies around him. I swore I would read no more Trump books but I’m glad I read this one. Well narrated.

Fascinating

So glad Maggie read this herself. An insightful read about the very hollowness of a man so many have strangely chosen to worship. A false idol indeed.

Disappointingly shallow

Although an extensive coverage of Trump’s adult life, this seemed to skate across everything with little analysis of anything in detail I don’t feel I knew anything more about Trump the person at the end of the book. I had big expectations and was disappointed that this was just another rehash of events that have been covered before.
