Publisher's Summary

Peter Darwin was hoping for some quiet leave from the Foreign Office. Instead he found himself in the village of his childhood, at the service of a veterinary surgeon whose operating theater was rapidly acquiring an unwanted reputation as an abattoir. The sudden unexplained death of a string of valuable racehorses from one small area in Gloucestershire was a mystery the police couldn't solve. But Darwin was local. He remembered people and what was at stake. And now he knew enough to get himself killed.

Horses that dies

As many others I believed that horses and novell's about them were mainly for girls. But this book is definetly not. It can of course be read by them, but not solely by them. Well, now to the book.

The book is a mystery-novell, in a british veterinary-clinic. Horses are dying on the table and a young veterinarian is being blamed for it. Now it is all up to Peter Darwin, an employe with the foreign-office. to help his new friend in uncover the mystery. As he gets deeper into the mystery, he finds out that it is not acidentially, but intentionally. Someone wants the clinic to close down. But who is it and why. Danger comes closer as does the answer to the riddle.

The book is exiting and well written. You get drawn into the world of horses and murder. The carecters are interesting, and the dept of them is very good. you are hooked from ten minutes in and all the way to the end.

Good story... sound Very poor .

Well read , good story but sound quality very poor. Background noise very distracting.
This book should be re read or withdrawn ! Unfair to charge for this audio book, if it was bought from a shop I would have returned it for a refund!

Classic Francis

I loved this as I drove to & from the Q.E. Hospital, 3 hours of great story telling. Made the journey flash by & I looked forward to the motorways!
But there is a background noise to this recording which was VERY distracting. It varies though the book & I did wonder if Tony Britton was sat in a mens' public lavatory whilst reading. Both tinkling water & later birdsong, I found my brain straining to identify. This meant I had to re listen to several parts over & over to get the storyline.
Background noise is sometimes incongruous to the setting of a chapter & it certainly affects the concentration & pleasure of listening.
This would certainly bear re-recording!

Comeback

One of the first audio books I listened to when it came out on cassette. Now I am pleased to be able to listen on Audible.
Tony Britton for me hits the spot as narrator. The story is interesting with a good dash of horse/veterinary information

Good story

Enjoyed the story and very well read, but was the narrator sitting in an aviary with a water feature tinkling in the background ?

Poor sound quality

Would you listen to Comeback again? Why?

I would not listen again, the sound is poor with background hiss and noise. I started to listen out for the background noise and not so much on the story which is a shame as I have always enjoyed his audio books in the past.

What three words best describe Tony Britton’s voice?

Rich expressive calming

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Would not listen in one sitting

Any additional comments?

There were also gaps in the recording, quite distracting.

Terrible sound in places!

Terrible sound in places!
Otherwise great. Classic Dick Francis, only spoilt at times by the suspicion that this recorded in a very amateur way.

Great story poor audio

We all know that some of the older dick Francis story readings by Tony Britton suffer with poor quality and fluctuations in audio levels between different sessions, but this is one of the worst I have come across - I could hear background noise and other people talking and walking past the room he was recording in at various points . Im sure these stories would benefit from a remaster even to make the audio levels consistent. Great story but very poor audio

Great story - Very Poor quality recording

Dick Francis writes rollicking stories, making the world he takes you into come alive, mostly from his intimate knowledge of racing and supported by meticulous research. Tony Britton is a good actor although a predictable pairing. The recoding however was very very poor quality. Every time the “session” was stopped you could hear that, the tone of sections was more often than not different, sometimes thin, sometimes scratchy with different background sounds almost as if it had been recorded at home. This was very very distracting, puncturing the engagement in the story again and again.
