Publisher's Summary

She's lost everything, except her life....

Lieutenant Lorraine Page once had everything - a devoted husband, two beautiful daughters and an impressive career with the Homicide Squad. It's impossible to believe that she could be thrown out of the police force and end up on Skid Row.

Without Lorraine, her colleagues struggle on, as the hunt for a nightmare serial killer spirals into an all-out search for a missing witness: a victim who escaped.

But Lorraine Page is about to be brought right back into that world again. Against her will she is drawn into the investigation and forced to face her past and her overwhelming guilt....

Based on a true story, the complete and unabridged Lorraine Page trilogy available for the first time in audio.

Not bad, but not her best.

This book takes forever to get going and I nearly gave up at the start, as there was way too much detail at the beginning, even allowing for establishing characters...... However, I stuck with it and overall, it's a good listen that sucks you in.

Good Story Lousy-ish Reader

As usual Lynda La Plante does really well, though it's clear she's far better suited to English drama. This American stuff is a little cliched. You can almost hear the publisher say: "Now, ya know, Lynda, baby, honey, sweetheart, you know we love your stuff, but what we really want you to do is write a sassy sultry LA thriller. THAT"S what we think'll REALLY sell some units."
But truth be told it's the reader that's really off - this Laurence Bouvard sounds like some sort of comedy act. Absurd voices, caricatures, no subtlety. It really cheapens the work. But it hasn't put me off Lynda, it'll take a lot worse to do that. Will probly give the next one a shot...

Listener Beware

Despite the 2010 publication date provided by Audible, I believe 2010 is either a republication date or the date the book was recorded. I mention this because "Cold Shoulder" is not the same quality fiction as Lynda La Plante's Jane Tennison or Anna Travis series.

In addition to unsympathetic characters and unnecessary length, it is the narrator who earns my review of "Cold Shoulder" the title Listener Beware. The narrator has only one voice to differentiate characters and that voice is an unpleasant, whiney stereotype of working class New Jersey. This is also inappropriate given that the book's setting is California.

Worst book she has written

I have read every book and listen to most on audible.
This is the worst one she has written.
She has really stooped to the gutter for this material.
She should stay with British style and the Americans to theirs
This book is not what we expect from Lynda
It was bad I got as far as chapter 4 and that was enough
total rubbish John Thompson

Okay story with horrid audio-editing and narrator

There were a few reviews that really disliked the book which made me hesitant to buy it. But I really love everything I've read from Lynda La Plante so far (which is quite a lot) and so I decided to give this audiobook a go. Contrary to some other reviewers I had no trouble getting pulled into the story right away. I didn't think it had a slow start at all. I've enjoyed the story but the narrator did everything she could to ruin it for me. Her normal reading voice is - albeit somewhat nasal - pleasant enough to listen to. I'm always using headphones but that's not a good idea with this narrator. She uses a weird, horribly nasal, high pitched, shrieking voice for one of the female characters in the book which hurt my ears - I immediately had to turn the volume down every time the narrator was using this voice. She also made one of the male characters in the book sound as if he had a few roos loose in the top paddock. And again I had to turn down the volume with this character because it was really hurting my ears, which was incredibly irritating! But I guess that also has to do with some really bad audio editing, which I think is quite unacceptable considering it's not unthinkable that people will listen to this book using earbuds or headphones! And, like someone else already mentioned as well, the narrator uses accents for some of the characters that were really out of place. This story would have been way more enjoyable had the narrator refrained from using loud, nasal, shrieking New York (or thereabouts) accents. And that has nothing to do with the New York accent per se - give me Fran Drescher's the Nanny or Cindy Lauper anytime - but here it was misplaced, annoying and LOUD.

Best read ever

Lynda La Plante has once again exceeded my expectations with a book which is so brilliant I couldn't stop listening to.
it was written a while ago, I honestly don't know how I missed reading it when it came out.
I thought The Widows was good but this is on par or better.
Lynda what a brilliant writer you are. thank you so much for writing this book, I look forward to hearing the next two in the trilogy.
audible please put all of Lynda's work on your site.
I recommend this book. The narrator is brilliant too.
