Publisher's Summary

Two rural families flee to the city and find themselves sharing a great, breathing, shuddering joint called Cloudstreet, where they begin their lives from scratch. For 20 years, they roister and rankle, laugh and curse until the roof over their heads becomes a home for their hearts.

Critic Reviews

AudioFile Earphones Award, Exceptional Audio Performance, 2004

"One of those rare novels that warm the heart, as well as spark the imagination." (Kirkus Reviews

"Peter Hosking's performance is true to Winton's unsentimental exploration into humankind's ability to love and survive amid adversity.... His characterizations, including an aboriginal ghost and a talking pig, are earthy, real, and frequently hilarious." (AudioFile)

Fantastic

Tim Winton you have done it again. This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. I didn't want it to end, I cried and laughed all the way through it. I wanted to see what else happened to these wonderful familes.

Unique and moving

This was my first Winton novel and I am hooked. Great storytelling with unique characters & a way of unpacking a long story where you are left in the end with such depth & emotion. It was moving to journey with the Lambs and Pickles through the decades & I so enjoyed the humour, wit, and drama that saturated it throughout.

Crass

The story was hard to get into. Swearing, prostitution, I bailed with the first hour.

I loved this story the fifth time, as much as the first

This author and story are outstanding. The location was my own childhood. Thank you Mr Winton. Peter Hosking your narration is awesome but I wish Tim had assisted you in the pronouncing of some of the locations ie Albany, Mandurah, Rokeby Road and Greenough. But I will forgive an Eastern Stater with such a stunning voice. Brilliant book.

Engaging tale of a bygone Australia

The characters are so well drawn and the story so engaging that there is a kind of sorrow when the book finishes. This is my first Tim Winton novel and it has whet my appetite for more.

first time I have read/heard a tim Winton. not sure I would have lasted thru the paper version but in traffic jams whilst driving it beats the garbage on the radio in commuter time.

Cloudstreet. One of the best . If not the best.

Excellent story, and a big shout out to Peter Hosking. He has read this book perfectly, and seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself while doing it.
I'll definitely be checking out other books read by Peter Hosking.

aimless

So many things felt like they were driving somewhere only for no explanation at the end. It felt like the last season of Lost. Tim is no doubt a beautiful writer but I feel my hours reading this have been entirely forgettable.

Totally exceptional

This has always been my favourite book- the best I have ever read-and this audio version is brilliant in every way- you know these two families like your own by the time the book (audio or print) has finished - Tim Winton is on top of the best - this audio performance does his book justice with every chapter
