About this listen

The long-awaited fourth audiobook in the New York Times best-selling Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix.

Award-winning author Garth Nix returns to the Old Kingdom with a thrilling prequel complete with dark magic, royalty, dangerous action, a strong heroine, and flawless world-building. This epic fantasy adventure is destined to be a classic, and is perfect for fans of Game of Thrones.

Clariel is the daughter of one of the most notable families in the Old Kingdom, with blood relations to the Abhorsen and, most important, to the King. She dreams of living a simple life but discovers this is hard to achieve when a dangerous Free Magic creature is loose in the city, her parents want to marry her off to a killer, and there is a plot brewing against the old and withdrawn King Orrikan. When Clariel is drawn into the efforts to find and capture the creature, she finds hidden sorcery within herself, yet it is magic that carries great dangers. Can she rise above the temptation of power, escape the unwanted marriage, and save the King?

An interesting and in depth look into the old kingdom world. I found the story quite drawn out and in all honesty did not enjoy Clariel as a character, nor for that matter any of the few supporting characters either for that matter.

Rich in world not in character

I love this story. As with the other Abhorsen books, this one is really well written and narrated but gosh is it beautiful. It will break your heart with how perfect it is and you'll never forget Clariel! Absolute favourite top Nix story. Seriously do yourself a favor but read the other books first in order for this to truly mean something. Clariel is drawn into the efforts to find and capture the creature, she finds hidden sorcery within herself, yet it is magic that carries great dangers. This is the origin story of a villain and it is stunning, beautiful, wonderfully imagined, and delivered! Bravo! It will stay with me forever.

Heart-rending and perfect!

I loved the performance from the narrator with this book, so much so I'm not sure if I was hooked on the book because of the writing or because how it was read.

Great story and narrator.

Stunning, as always. Such a great look back into when the Old Kingdom was at its height, before the fall. Loved every moment

A great look back in time

I absolutely loved reading more about the Old Kingdom in the Golden Era where the Dead weren't plentiful. I enjoyed the world building detail Nix included so we really saw the wider tapestry of the powers weakening and those struggling to gain power.
Following Clariel's path is captivating because it is a snapshot of a blossoming of a darker bloom. When all the forces tug you every which way it's a real reflection of Nix's fabled Does the walker choose the path or the path the walker" in Clariel's case.
I've read it several times but enjoyed the audible and narration which helped weave a very powerful spell over me while listening to it.

Spellbinding

i have loved this series!! Devoured every book, & i loved Tim Curry's narration. This book seemed to lack the same essence. The narrator is good, & did a good job.. but just wasnt the same for me. The story was very slow, didn't have the same climax & just suddenly ended.

i miss Tim Curry
