In the small Irish town of Knockglen, best friends Bernadette ('Benny') and Eve are inseparable. Benny is an adored only child, and Eve, a poor, birdlike orphan brought up by nuns.

On their first day at University College, Dublin, a fatal road accident brings the pair together with fellow students Nan Mahon and Jack Foley, and new friendships are quickly struck. A story of friends and families, of growing up in Ireland and learning hard truths. Fantastic narration - the narrator can change her voice to be many different characters, all in a convincing way.

I regret that I have only recently discovered Maeve Binchy but am so glad I did. Her writing is textured, sensitive, weighty and alarming. I would find myself immersed and not wanting it to end. I could smell the burnt sausages on the moonlit beach party. I felt I could wipe the silent tears, feel the many fabrics and join in with the exuberant dancing. There is young love, aspirations, social expectations, orphans, religious curiousity and a bewildering array of characters that you get to laugh at, to hope for, to despise and to understand.

Many years since I have read a Maeve Binchy book. As I was unwell an audio book was perfect for me. The style of the book was also perfect and I enjoyed it very much. I will certainly choose another title very soon. The story was convincing and the people in it also.
