Publisher's Summary

Waking up in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head is bad. Finding out I have amnesia is far worse. My memory is practically wiped. I don't know why someone wants me dead. Hell, I don't even know my name. They say my name is Christian Cross. Too bad that name means nothing to me.

I haven't forgotten everything, though. Grayson Laurie has always been my kryptonite, and it would take more than a bullet to the brain to forget him. He assures me that I'm imagining the distance between us, but I know better. I just don't know how to fix it. I console myself that at least I've reached rock bottom and things can't get worse...until they do.

My life is a tangled mess of lies and deceit. The more I learn about myself, the less I want to know. I want nothing more than an honest future with Gray, but the past isn't about to let me go without a fight.

Fortunately, I'm starting to realize that fighting is my specialty.

Great premise but underwhelmed me

Christian Cross wakes up in hospital with a gunshot wound to the head and a severe case of amnesia. Gray, the boyfriend he remembers, tells him they split up years ago while Andy, the guy who claims Chris is his current boyfriend, gives him the creeps. As Chris desperately tries to piece together his former life, he soon discovers he doesn’t like the answers to his questions. I loved the premise of this, I love all things SE Harmon and I appreciated this journey into romantic sci-fi thriller. But like other reviewers, the execution did not quite work for me. I had similar issues with the plot holes and inconsistencies but I mainly struggled with the tone. SE Harmon does a great line in snark and wit, but Chris’s wise-cracking cynicism sat awkwardly with the seriousness of his situation and the tragedy of his past. I couldn’t decide whether I was meant to take this seriously or not, so the jokes tended to fall flat or undermine the peril. Audio narrator Kai Rubio voices Chris in a pretty subdued tone and that may have also diminished the way I experienced the jokes and the action. You know those cliffhanger books where it feels like someone just ripped out the last few chapters? That’s what happens here. Luckily at the time of writing this, the second audiobook is already out. I’m loyal to SE Harmon and I’ll hope things gel more in book 2.
