Die Verbindung der Motive zu einer geschlossenen Handlung ist dem Kunstmärchen vorenthalten, von denen es in China wahre Perlen gibt.
Bei der Auswahl und Zusammenstellung der Chinesischen Märchen wurde besonders auf die mündliche Überlieferung wert gelegt und, dass die Märchen aus China stammen oder nach chinesischen Maßstäben umgeformt wurden.
