Critic Reviews

"Pack's horror anthology provides a great deal of haunting entertainment, especially as delivered by the gifted narrator Jacob York.... York narrates with such compelling energy that listeners will follow him through all the evil and deadly encounters in the collection." ( AudioFile)

meh

did not finish this one.
the stories are bland and the narrators pauses in places that don't need them. it's quite irritating and disrupts the flow of the the reading.

Great performance

The stories are decent horror, atmospheric and disturbing, but the narration is what really pushes it into 5 star territory. Every voice, every mood, every turn of phrase, the reader really nails it.

The Perfect Adult Halloween Book

A collection of truly dark and deep short stories,
many of which have a sexual element that makes this book so much more than your typical Halloween collections.

The stuff nightmares are made of...

I could have listened to ten more stories, this book was so good. The narration was great and from the first story I was hooked. I can honestly say the author did a great job creating chilling, haunting, eerie scenarios. Cannot wait to read more.

😳 Literary Horror

Beautiful, complex and horrific short stories told by an enthusiastic narrator. This is one book that must be listened to! Reminiscent of the greats: Lovecraft and Poe.

Certain Dark Things

The story and performance were both done very well. This is definitely a book for adults so I don't recommend letting your child/teen read this. The book kept my attention the whole time and the stories reminded me of Tales From the Crypt. I highly recommend.

I Need More!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! It's quite an interesting collection of stories and I think there's something in it to appeal to every reader or listener. It was my introduction to M.J. Pack and I am now hunting down the rest of her horror writing. Awesome writing and voice acting make it a definite favourite.

What about Jacob York’s performance did you like?

At first, I thought it was an odd choice to have a male narrating so many female-based stories by a female author, but I have to admit that I absolutely loved his acting. "For Everything There Is a Season (Danny's Story)" was utterly amazing. His voice!

Dreadfully Wonderful

What did you love best about Certain Dark Things?

I really thought this was a great book of short stories, really made me say what the...F@&! many times... I even had to rewind to make sure I heard the ending correctly sometimes.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Certain Dark Things?

Ducky.

What about Jacob York’s performance did you like?

He was wonderful. I thought it would be difficult to hear a man voicing a girls character because so many narrators are not so good at it but he did amazing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I think it would be awesome for this book to be turned into a mini series like on Netflix because of stories but to name it.... the title of the book is already perfect for it so just leave it. "Certain Dark Things"

Any additional comments?

I wish there was more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jacob York, Amazing

The narrator made the stories come alive. Best narrator I've listened to on Audible. Definitely worth a try.

A brilliant horror collection

The first thing I loved about this collection was how unique some of the storytelling was, both in style and in ideas. The second thing was the range of the storytelling. There's ghosts, freakshows, urban legends, insane asylums, bugs, serial killers and so much more. It was quick paced, creepy and keeps you on your toes with many dark twists.

Having enjoyed it so much, I was surprised to find it had a few mixed reviews on Goodreads, so you might want to check them out first, and also bare in mind that there's a lot of TW content around SA against adults and minors, and domestic abuse.

Otherwise, I highly recommend this one, it provides some diabolical reading.

Great stories with an excellent performance

The stories are great, some far creepier than others. And the performance is superb, really bringing the stories to life. All in all, a great package.

A nice assortment of tales.

A good cross section of stories in this collection. Some of them are barely a paragraph but no less effective for that. The narrator is fairly competent at the varied characters- his voice doesn’t grate on your ears like so many others so, overall, an enjoyable listen.

Brilliant compilation

I absolutely loved these stories, I'm going straight back to listen again from the beginning - the detail described in the stories and the way the narrator performs the reading is so good, you can really see the settings and the characters, M J Pack is my new favourite author and Jacob York is my new favourite Audible Narrator :)
