About this listen

Twin Peaks meets The Dry in a deliciously dark and twisted tale that unravels a small Australian country town.

Ambitious young journalist Marlowe ‘Lo’ Robertson would do anything to escape the suffocating confines of her small home town. While begrudgingly covering the annual show for the local newspaper, Lo is horrified to discover the mutilated corpse Lily Williams – the town's reigning showgirl and her best friend.

Seven strange symbols have been ruthlessly carved into Lily’s back. But when Lo reports her grisly find to the town’s police chief, he makes her promise not to tell anyone about the symbols. Lo obliges, though it’s not like she has much of a choice – after all, he is also her father.

But when Lily’s murder makes headlines around the country and the town is invaded by the media, Lo seizes the opportunity to track down the killer and make a name for herself by breaking the biggest story of her life.

What Lo uncovers is that her sleepy home town has been harbouring a deadly secret, one so shocking that it will captivate the entire nation. And it will change the course of her life forever.

I think the True Detective series with Matthew McConaughy and Woody Harrelson has inspired a lot of fiction re claustrophobic small towns with sinister hidden groups. This continues in this vein but is sorely let down by the very self absorbed and rather unpleasant main character who is just too unlikeable imho.
Good narration.

Unlikeable main character

Overall this was an enjoyable read, the narration by Jessica Tovey was excellent and helped capture each new character speaking and really set the tone. I did struggle a little with the story itself as it felt like it took a long time to reach any resolution and even when it did much was still left unresolved to the reader. The setting of Kiama Australia was described beautifully and really build a strong image to the reader, the story line just lacked a little and our protagonist left the reader with many moments of frustration, overall a good read and great audiobook, prepared to have more questions than answers though.

A mystery that leaves you with many questions

As I live on the south coast NSW I was interested in the location as it is a couple of hours north of here. The plot had plenty of twists and the ending lends itself to a sequel. I think that the narrator was well suited also. Will look out for more from this author.

Nice to see another promising Aussie author.

As I know the area quite well it was interesting. The characters were intriguing as was the story. However I found the main character annoying, just the way she was portrayed by the author. Living with dad, she’s an adult but too much under the fathers control which didn’t gel with her ‘independent’ attitude.

Interesting story
