La battaglia di Montecassino fu una serie di quattro assalti degli Alleati lungo la Linea Gustav dell'Asse, con l'intenzione di aprirsi la strada per Roma. Furono scontri sanguinosi che causarono notevoli perdite su entrambi i fronti e distrussero gran parte della città e del patrimonio storico-artistico dell'area, compresa l'abbazia medievale che dominava l'area.
