About this listen

Never assume….

…That your uber competent personal assistant will get it when you announce your (fake) engagement to him during a live on-air interview with your archnemesis.

Never waver....

…From your plan to punish your arrogant celebrity boss for his presumption by turning your (fake) wedding into a reality competition for event planners.

Never admit....

…That the feelings blossoming between the two of you through seven (fake) engagement celebrations, six (fake) bachelor parties, five (fake) wedding party luncheons, and four (fake) rehearsal dinners are about as (real) you can get.

Camera Shy is a boss/employee, fake-engagement, right-in-front-of-your-nose romantic comedy featuring a former child model-turned-PA who is so done with cameras, a cocky LGBTQ activist/talk show host who does not lose, more scarves than midwinter in Boston, and banter. So. Much. Banter.

Dustin Fremont has his hands full as PA to adversarial gay talk show host and greek god Ari Dimitriou. He’s used to Ari’s high-handed and self-indulgent ways but even he is taken aback when Ari announces on air that he is (fake) engaged to Dustin to score a point with a combative guest. Dustin refuses to be on camera, it’s written into his contract, but he takes great delight in punishing Ari by pitching a reality TV show to the network which will result in Ari and Dustin getting married in the final episode.

I love romances about reality TV shows and I thoroughly enjoyed this playful romcom. While Ari is Dustin’s boss, Dustin has always managed to keep him in check and it was great to watch him turn the tables on Ari and have Ari jump through his hoops for a change! I also loved the whole celebrity background story about why Dustin is so camera shy, but best of all, I loved watching Ari’s redemption arc from arrogant cluelessness to remorseful awareness. There are quite a few characters but most play bit parts and it didn’t take long to remember who was who. EJ Russell often uses 3rd-person narration to present strong chemistry without descriptive steam and that’s the case here, we hover just over Dustin and Ari’s shoulders and it’s a great ride. 🎧 Greg Boudreaux gives another brilliant performance in the audio, handling the humour, drama, and the different character voices with ease.

Very satisfying reality TV show romcom!

I liked Ari and Dustin’s story. It was fun. The MCs truly likeable. The secondary characters added as well. I wonder if Jessie got a book? Anyway, Greg Boudreaux got behind the spirit of the characters and I think he made it better. The only problem, and I had this with Single White Incubus, by Russell as well, is the miscommunication dragged and Dustin just doubted and doubted and doubted, Ari never thought to reassure, and it carried on past the point it needed to. Still, I had fun listening to Camera Shy.

Entertaining.

Has good banter and and actual plo (though still a heavy focus on the romance). The misunderstandings makes sense in the 'Hollywood makes everything dramatic kind of way'.

My minor gripe is that I wish there was a little bit more on both mcs doing their jobs. Particularly for Dustin since it was so new. Feel like it would make them feel more real and the romance pop more when it does happen. But I've always had the preference of more plot than romance- even though I'm here for the romance. So might just be a me thing.

Narrator did a great job!

This is one I would listen to again!
