About this listen

The first book in a brand-new thriller series by the Queen of Crime Drama, Lynda La Plante. A burnt-out cottage, a fortune buried in the ashes - and a body that could solve a decades-old crime....

Jack Warr is a young DC with the Metropolitan Police. Charming but aimless, Jack can't seem to find his place in the world - until he's drawn into an investigation that turns his life upside down.

In the aftermath of a fire at a derelict cottage, a badly charred body is discovered, along with the burnt remnants of millions of stolen, untraceable bank notes - the hidden legacy of Dolly Rawlins and her gang of Widows.

Jack's assignment to the case coincides with an investigation into his own past. As he searches for the truth about his identity, Jack finds himself increasingly drawn into a murky underworld of corruption and crime. Those millions have not been forgotten - and Jack will stop at nothing to find the truth.

An exciting and action packed new thriller, with roots in La Plante's best-selling novels, Widows, Widows' Revenge and She's Out.

Spoiler Alert ****
Have thoroughly enjoyed this series and I hated what happened to Dolly but loved that Julia continued her dream (sort of)x.
Is it just me or did anyone else pick up a couple of errors? Like when Dolly came out of prison in the 2nd book it was a huge WHITE Rolls that was waiting for her outside but in the 3rd book it was a BLACK Mercedes waiting outside the prison…. Also during the train robbery, how could Angela have helped dump the cash if she was up in London with Kathleen’s kids? They later say Angela was up in London with the kids but I wanna say it was meant to be Gloria that helped with dumping the cash?
Anyway great listen and I loved the narration by Annie Aldington.

Excellent finish with a couple of questions 🤔

I loved the cast of characters… a great listen indeed. Lynda captures the dichotomy and conflict of each character so well.

An engaging listen

SUCH a great "story teller" and always makes reading a pleasure. Thankfully there is always more to come.

Thank you!

Just couldn't keep me interested - the story or the narrator. Gave up very early on.

Not a book for me

The one review about this book is quite harsh I thought. The narrator did a great job with all the different accents. He speaks slowly, but it can be sped up if you prefer a faster pace.
The main character is refreshingly different from every other DI or DC ir DS.
I enjoyed the mix of the old crime with the present day

Interesting plot and great twist

I truly do not understand the negative reviews on this book. I found it well read, the narrators voice pleasant and paced nicely, and the story both believable and entertaining. I got this book because it was on sale and I think it was a good thing that I and other listeners were encourage to give this book a chance. I’m not any where near disappointed and I’ll be getting more in the series. I recommend. 5 stars.

was reasonably enjoyable. Became concerned every time the female narrator started as I found her voice terrible. Fortunately she only did a few short pieces. The rest had a very pleasant male voice.
