Publisher's Summary

The first book in a brand-new thriller series by the Queen of Crime Drama, Lynda La Plante. A burnt-out cottage, a fortune buried in the ashes - and a body that could solve a decades-old crime....

Jack Warr is a young DC with the Metropolitan Police. Charming but aimless, Jack can't seem to find his place in the world - until he's drawn into an investigation that turns his life upside down.

In the aftermath of a fire at a derelict cottage, a badly charred body is discovered, along with the burnt remnants of millions of stolen, untraceable bank notes - the hidden legacy of Dolly Rawlins and her gang of Widows.

Jack's assignment to the case coincides with an investigation into his own past. As he searches for the truth about his identity, Jack finds himself increasingly drawn into a murky underworld of corruption and crime. Those millions have not been forgotten - and Jack will stop at nothing to find the truth.

An exciting and action packed new thriller, with roots in La Plante's best-selling novels, Widows, Widows' Revenge and She's Out.

What a great sequel to widows

So enjoyed this book after all the widows books. I'm hoping this will continue and more books to this one and continue the story

An excellent story

What a really good story that kept on the edge of my seat the whole time. At times I thought the plot had gone off on a odd tangent but it all became clear as the plot evolved. It was much the same for the narration but as the book progressed I found that it couldn't have been better. A great book in the true English story telling fashion.

Enjoyable but complex story

I will be listening to this again. I feel complex stories are not well suited for audible. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it the first time and look forward to hearing it again.

An engaging listen

I loved the cast of characters… a great listen indeed. Lynda captures the dichotomy and conflict of each character so well.

It’s great!

I truly do not understand the negative reviews on this book. I found it well read, the narrators voice pleasant and paced nicely, and the story both believable and entertaining. I got this book because it was on sale and I think it was a good thing that I and other listeners were encourage to give this book a chance. I’m not any where near disappointed and I’ll be getting more in the series. I recommend. 5 stars.

a lot to keep track of

3 1/2 stars. My first Lynda La Plante book (and the first in a series) and it was good but I'm not in a hurry to continue.
There are A LOT of characters and it switches between timelines so at times it's hard to keep track. I did like that the women were the criminal masterminds netting 27 million pounds in a train robbery over 30 years ago. They were underestimated and that adds a bit of 'eff you' to the story. The ending was unexpected and I liked that.
Overall pretty good but I've read other police procedurals that I'd rather continue.

ridiculous

Silly story, annoying and very disappointing. No idea how something like this is rated five stars by some.
