About this listen

Bryony and her sisters have come down in the world. Their merchant father died trying to reclaim his fortune and left them to eke out a living in a village far from their home in the city. But when Bryony is caught in a snowstorm and takes refuge in an abandoned manor, she stumbles into a house full of dark enchantments. Is the Beast that lives there her captor or a fellow prisoner? it is pretty obvious from the start that the bones of this story is the classic beauty and the beast tale. however like a brilliant music cover, T. Kingfisher has but their spin on it. I love how real, and flawed that the characters are. in many ways it reminds me of Neil Gaimon and Terry Prachett, two of my fav authors.

What if beauty wasn’t the one to live the beast? What if the beast had to change himself? What if he was immortal? Once again T. Kingfisher brings their own unique style to retelling a classic tale. Absolutely fantastic.

Love the cynical dry humour and sarcasm of this author. The vocal drawl of the reader enhanced it throughout the storytelling making it a perfect match. Found myself laughing, smiling and smirking more often than not. Fabulous combination.

I like a good narrator who’s unreliable cos they’re not super observant (I mean also scared a lot)

This was an ok story- basically beauty and the beast.
Narrator had an annoying, nasal tone which sounded so fake I wasn’t sure what she was trying to achieve.
Another free read which I am glad I didn’t pay for.

Justine Eyre does a wonderful dashing gentleman voice. Her performance brings out the best in this novel.
A charming fairy tale for grown ups, safe for all ages but the sardonic humour is probably more entertaining for adults than kids. Not perfect, but a lovely escape. I was never a d/sney princess fan so I don't know the original story well. It's frustrating that she ignores the obvious clues while bemoaning her lack of information, maybe that's a necessary part of the story? But the charm of the place and the tale kept me wanting more. The ending was more trippy than it was romantic, but I guess HEA.
